Comments Thread For: Lomachenko: Pros In Olympics Good Idea; Making Weight Tough

There might not be a greater authority than Vasyl Lomachenko on what it takes to become an elite amateur and professional boxer in the 21st century. The AIBA announcement Wednesday that revealed boxing's international amateur sanctioning organization has voted to allow professional boxers to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was met mostly with harsh criticism. Lomachenko, however, explained during a conference call Wednesday why he thinks it is a good idea.

for the cream of the amateur crop, it may not be a massive problem, but it's the lower-tier Olympians that the issue is with

The average age of the 4 medalist in the 2012 Olympics per weight division was 24.65 years old. The average age of the gold medalist for all divisions was 24.8 years old.

It's not as bad as people keep making it sound. Their are career amateur boxers in the Olympics regularly, who are also much older than many of the younger standouts (who actually do win).

In 2012 the youngest medalist was an 18 year old, who won gold in the Flyweight division. The oldest was 31, gold medalist in the light flyweight division.

The weight thing is definitely an interesting point, and definitely a point that I ignored, tbh.

With the day-of weighing in, Kovalev would have to fight amateur heavyweights, Ward would likely still fight amateur light heavyweight (179lbs as the hard limit would actually have Ward watching the weight a bit, rather than just pigging out to get over the minimum weight), 'Canelo' Alvarez would have to mind his weight to fight amateur middleweights, Pacquiao fights amateur welterweights at 152lbs, with every other pro likely competing 10lbs above whatever they fight at professionally as amateurs.

Well, this SD was overhall seen by most observers as a draw.

And he got more "cheated" than "bested" since Salido failed to make weight.

Salido came at 128 1/2, had he made the effort to go down under 126, how this fight woulda played in the late rounds?

We don't know, but I jut can't stand PROFESSIONAL fighters failing to make weight.
