It seemed like an accidental discovery. He discovered Hearns is chinny and rode with it.

Leonard always looked for the KO when the opportunity was there, he was great at closing the show. I'm sure he wanted to KO Hearns too if there was a opening but ideally without being outboxed the first 12 rounds and behind on the cards.
