Comments Thread For: Groves Feels Murray Never Recovered From Pounding By Golovkin

George Groves believes Martin Murray is a fighter in decline as a consequence of his defeat by Gennady Golovkin. The two are to fight on June 25 at London's 02 Arena on the undercard of Anthony Joshua's IBF heavyweight title defence against America's Dominic Breazeale.

He's still got enough to beat groves. Murray isn't the same but he was a very good win for ggg

Murray fought a good fight against GGG.

The only person 'not the same' is Groves after Froch snatched the life from him in front of 80k at Wembley Stadium.

Gonna put my money on a Groves win via stoppage in this fight... Reminds me a bit of the questions Groves was facing when he fought Paul Smith, which also shows how Groves career has gone backwards...

Groves looks more shopworn than Murray to be honest. Maybe he'll improve with Shane McGuigan.

Murray took a battering against Golovkin. Rewatched it recently and it was a better performance from Golovkin than I initially had thought. A sustained beatdown from Rd 3 or 4 onwards.

Who ever wins the real winners are gona be the Fans. I give Groves the nod in terms of power but Murray has better stamina and resilience.

Another thing is Groves got knocked down in his his fight and was able to fight back to get a split decision loss good on him but he was hardly robbed. Murray on the other hand, knocked Martinez down twice and lost a unanimous descision...now that is a robbery.

Yeah I watched it back again just yesterday and agree with that...It was a much more sustained loss for Murray than seemed at the time, maybe I got caught up with the fact he hung in there for so long.

I would prefer a Murray victory over Groves in all honesty. Maybe Groves can improve here and there, but for the most part I truly believe coming off as the sure-fire loser in the whole Froch/Groves saga must have taken away a lot of him. Especially mentally...And Murray is tough too, I think he beats Groves.

When I watched it live I thought Golovkin was fairly unimpressive in the first half of the fight. But he was better than I thought. He caught and parried lot of Murray's attacks with a simple triangle guard, and he didn't get reckless with his defence until Murray was gassing and he was going for the kill.

Exactly. Murray lasted a lot longer than a lot of other fighters would have, he is tough thats for sure. As you said, at the time it felt like an off night for GGG to me, but upon re-viewing it is a clean and decisive slow beating from 3/4 onwards. It may not be one of his highlight fights, but it arguably showed a better side too him than the quick blowout results he has had...I prefer to see that slower dismantling sometimes.
