Jermell Charlo and his new trainer. Not a good fit?

Jermell & twin brother Jermall, for almost 15 years have shared the same trainer in Ronnie Shields. Recently, Jermell left and went for a new trainer, Derrick James. James' most well known client is Errol Spence. Shields is currently trainer for his brother, Erislandy Lara, Edwin Rodríguez, Bryan Vera and Artur Szpilka. Not to mention past talent in Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Pernell Whitaker and Vernon Forrest among others.

Why in the hell would Jermell leave him? I think it really showed up in his recent match with John Jackson. He has never looked so bad. Even in his previous fight vs. Joachim Alcine, Charlo didn't look like the Ronnie Shields version. He was gettin hit more than ever, but because Alcine was old as dirt, that didn't bother him.

I think it was a poor decision to go to Derrick James. I mean, if you're gonna leave a trainer, leave and go to a guy with experience. Besides Errol Spence, I don't even know who else James trains.

James is much more of an offensive minded trainer whereas Ronnie is more defensive. Charlo on his front foot is just bad.

He fights much more offensive, and is much more open than when he was with Ronnie Shields. Bad move on Jermell's part, IMO.

Wild looping swings vs. John Jackson in the first round. I was like, wtf is this dude doing.

I think he made a mistake going with Edwards. At least based on his last couple of fights.

We'll really know in his next couple of fights. He has to fight Charles Hatley next (who I've never seen fight, his biggest win in over Anthony Mundine last year. He also has one loss vs. Lanardo Tyner.) And than, the winner of Demetrius Andrade vs. Willie Nelson next month.

Hopefully we can get Charlo vs. Julian Williams and Charlo vs. Andrade on the same card.

With both brothers being on the path to world championships (and both now being champion), Jermell likely started to feel like he wasn't getting the type of attention (with his brother and Lara also in the camp) that he needed.

Likely not wanting to travel too far, Derreck James is likely the best trainer that he could've ended up going to in Texas besides Ronnie Shields.

Because Ronnie Shields and Derrick James teach differently; he's making the change in a tight spot, but I wouldn't gauge any melding of changes until the 3rd/4th full camp with James. No idea how good Charles Hatley (WBC mandatory challenger) is, but hopefully things start to jell in this third camp.

At least wait until he has a fighter that loses a fight one time before you go counting him out maybe?
