  • Has There Ever Been This Much Ducking?

Ducking is something that can be often misunderstood. Often times, the business of boxing gets in the way and other factors and well, it's like life. Sometimes we don't get the best fights because, SHYTE happens.

However, this seems to be mounting up for whatever reason.

Canelo hands over the title. And let's be honest. Before Bowe did so to Lewis, when else has this ever taken place in the sport's history? Especially the heavyweight champion always took on challengers, even if he was going to get obliterated and in both of these fights- Bowe-Lewis and Canelo-Golovkin- both men had good chances to win. It wasn't even that one-sided. Yet, James J. Braddock had the stones to go against Joe Louis who must have been a heavy favorite. In turn, Louis stepped in with Marciano.

The Wilder-Povetkin fight dies. Now this is over a really strange issue with the use of the now banned substance that wasn't banned when Povetkin took it. I could actually chalk this one up to SHYTE happens. Povetkin took it when it was legal and Wilder shouldn't fight him with that illegal substance in him. So what can you do?

And it looks like we are getting Thurman-Porter, after a delay of course, much like we got Klitschko-Fury, after a delay as well. In both instances, the champions did not appear to be jumping up and down about facing their challengers the fights got put off. Injuries and car wrecks do happen, but I don't know. The could have been buying time but at least they will meet, so far.

Most fans want Roman Gonzalez to face Estrada in the rematch, but that doesn't seem likely. Fans want Golovkin to step up, but how can he since everyone seems afraid of him? Even Kovalev doesn't seem interested in unifying against Stevenson.

Seems like it's getting to be in vogue to be a chicken and try to find safer fights.

Most of the cases you listed isn't even "ducking".

That's a good point. Sam Langford was avoided like the plague.

It seems like that era is coming back.

yep, where stars can kidnap belts and not fight the best

Brook is doing from with his IBF trinket....Manny was moving smaller guys up....Stevenson hasnt fought a top guy since winning the title

its pretty bad. its all risk/reward ratio.

its crazy because the fighter they called a cherrypicker has the best resume of the last 20 years.

          Boxing has gotten crazy.

I kinda blame floyd because now fighters realize they can make a lot of money. But the difference is Floyd fought the best, 49-0 and ended his career with back to back wins over 15 different champions but maximized the money. Labeled a ducker lol. ENDED up beating everyone on his hit list

seems like legacy went out the window after some fighters saw the coin DLH, FLOYD AND MANNY MADE

There has been a big drop in legacy for sure.

I read where old time fighters wouldn't even clinch because it looked weak.

And just look at what we see today in some of these hug-fests.

No, there hasn't. There's always been lesser known/less popular fighters who were avoided by more popular fighters and their managers because the reward didn't match the risk but it was nowhere near as widespread as it is today. Today you've got fighters avoiding fights even when the financial reward is massive. Golovkin isn't some obscure, underground name; he's Bumnelo's most lucrative opponent and a potentially career-defining win.

Don't throw Stevenson's name in there, either. Kovalev's team avoiding a purse bid doesn't outweigh Stevenson twice blatantly ducking the fight.

Not in any era I know anything about. I'm not the most knowledgeable, and I'm pretty much talking 70s on, but ducking is literally everywhere now. You can't escape it in any division.

                  Oh really?

Honestly, I didn't know that about Stevenson. Given his caliber of opposition, though, that makes sense. The last guy he fought had no chance at all, but did manage to land a few punches before getting zonked. It was sad to watch though, knowing Stevenson wouldn't step up and fight a real challenge.
