Comments Thread For: Bob Arum: AIBA Think They Can Take Over Boxing - They Can't!

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum has slammed as "total madness" a proposal to allow professional boxers to fight against amateurs in the Rio Olympics. The 84-year-old American, who has arranged fights for ring greats from Muhammad Ali to Manny Pacquiao in a career spanning more than 50 years, believes boxers could be seriously hurt if the plan by the sport's governing body, the International Boxing Association (AIBA), goes ahead.

You guys anti-AIBA letting pro boxers into the Olympics know thats an attempt at keeping boxing relevant in the Olympics right?

I mean every couple years they talk about getting rid of boxing. I think they just tried to get rid of wrestling. I mean f#cking wrestling is supposedly one of the first sports period & the Olympics was like f#ck wrestling lol.

If you are cool with no pro boxers in the Olympics + no boxing in the Olympics fair enough.

If you've noticed, the commissions and promoters have been bringing this up for a couple of years now. The fans don't pay any attention to this possibility but it has organizations like WBC and Top Rank shook. I wonder why?

AIBA needs to stay in their lane. Amateur boxing should stay separate from the pros.

It might even the playing field. When 30 year old Felix Savon ko'ed 19 year old Shannon Briggs in the Olympics that was a pro vs a young amateur. But it would certainly spread a already stretched sport even more thin. It's bad in terms of what a boxer will aim to accomplish in the future of the sport. Maybe they become content with being a one time champion and run back to the ams. Who knows.
