Comments Thread For: Boxing on The Brink in New York

By Thomas Hauser - It's rare to find someone in boxing who genuinely cares about the sweet science . . . Understands the sport and business . . . Is ethical and smart . . . And is a good administrator. David Berlin exemplified all of these qualities as executive director of the New York State Athletic Commission. Multiple sources say that he was removed from his position on Friday, May 13. That decision is bad for the commission and bad for boxing.

Damn. I assume this is due to the Magomed situation.

No way. Boxing was the Mecca (I admit Vegas is now) it won't ever end in NY.

Of course this is a direct result of the Mago situation but I tend to think that this concern is SLIGHTLY overblown (but very much a problem nonetheless)

Let's pretend for a minute (just hypothetically) that 1 out of every 100 fights resulted in a fighter needing $1 million in emergency medical care (in reality, the rate of Mago-type life-threatening injuries is FAR, FAR less than 1/100 (thank God))

If there was a 1/100 chance of the insurance company having to pay out a $1 million claim then you're talking about a $10,000 premium at break-even.

This policy doesn't threaten big-time cards, but IT SERIOUSLY threatens any small shows featuring young prospects on the rise.

There needs to be some common sense applied here for smaller-scale events where the insurance required varies based on the purses of the fighters on the card.

A big HBO card should be insured up to a million because they can and the promoter is making plenty of money and can afford $10K.

A small hall show can't afford that though, so mofifications need to be made to this policy so that small local cards can be put on & fighters can earn a living in the State of New York.

              David

It has nothing to do with Mago. David was not working for the NYSAC when it happened. This is pure politics. Certain people wanted him out. One guy was the Low Life John Signorile. A connected ****** !!

This blows. Barclays was starting to heat up with boxing activity, and MSG is still MSG. Horrid move that looked like was done in a vacuum without any research. Hope they re-think this.
