  • Comments Thread For: HBO Secures U.S. TV Rights For Fury-Klitschko Rematch

Most of the significant heavyweight action as of late has landed on Showtime's side of the street, but HBO still has a vested interest in boxing's most storied division. The American cable giant has recently secured U.S. TV rights for the July 9 rematch between World heavyweight king Tyson Fury and former champ Wladimir Klitschko. The two will collide at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England, with the bout to air live on HBO beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Nice, but I'm dreading hearing Lampley **** talk the previous fight (which granted did suck for pure entertainment purposes, but strategical in the sport of boxing was brilliant). This is gonna get watched with the sound off in my house. Although truth be told thats never bad for any boxing telecast overall.

With the technology always advancing at some point you gotta figure you can pick & choose who's take you wanna hear of a specific event in real time while watching said event. Like some twitter & TV combo.

To avoid the same, I streamed sky sports live & watched it from there to escape Lampley's drivel. Lampley sounds like an over enthisiatic & emotional fan who turned a boxing commentator.. But I like to hear what Roy & Max say sometimes during the fight which is quite insightful from a ring side view..

Maybe this was talked about elsewhere, but the fact that HBO securing the rights to the Fury-Klitschko rematch was actually being negotiated makes it pretty obvious that Klitschko's deal with HBO is up (and Fury has no standing deal with HBO either).

With Joshua signing with Showtime, and Wilder's business being basically exclusively with Showtime, the only heavyweight pieces that HBO even has proxy relationships with are Luis Ortiz(Golden Boy) and Andy Ruiz Jr(Top Rank).

The writing is on the wall.

This is good news for HBO! This is bad news for Showtime:

              May 13, 2016:

With the heavyweight title fight between champion Deontay Wilder and Russia’ Alexander Povetkin roughly a week away, a cloud now hangs over the fight. Dan Rafael of ESPN is reporting that Povetkin has tested positive for Melodium...

Melodium is the same drug that tennis star Maria Sharpova recently tested positive for in what became a major scandal for the 5 time grand slam champion.

Melodium is a drug that improves the blood flow, and it is used legally in Russia and countries of the former Soviet Union with a doctor’s prescription. Last year however, the drug was added to the “official” list of banned substances by VADA. The group apparently found a higher level of positive tests among athletes than among the general population.

Now, the WBC is the body sanctioning Wilder’s title defense against Povetkin, but the match looks to be very much in jeopardy. The test that came back positive was administered by VADA, which is considered the most advanced testing available today. It will be interesting to see as more details become available who requested the VADA testing, who paid for it and how it affects the match, which was scheduled for May 21st and is just eight days away.

Meanwhile, Deontay Wilder is in England as he was making his way to Russia adjusting to the potential time change. No word yet on whether Wilder will continue on to Russia or sit put in England, but word of an official cancellation has not come down. For Wilder, a late cancellation of the fight with long time mandatory challenger Povetkin leaves him looking for an opponent.

Good, HBO aiming to showcase the highest calibre HW matchup

Wilder / Joshua hold consolation prizes. Their titles are practically irrelevant
