I wonder if even Ring magazine would be corrupted, though, if they had that much power... you know that they would be getting bribe offers and other financial lures / pressures from all around the world, constantly, if they had the power to designate champs and rankings.

I think that you almost just need a heavyweight champion who has enough popularity combined with enough boxing dominance that he can bully the sanctioning bodies around a bit, forcing them to cooperate in setting up a temporary World Heavyweight Title for him to inhabit, along with rankings that all 4 main bodies agree upon that will determine his challengers; this temporary World Heavyweight Title could be a stepping-stone, perhaps, toward permanent World Titles in each division, and hopefully also to a single world-wide sanctioning body.

Imagine if the two best fighters in each weight class were constantly fighting for a single, undisputed world title. Mayweather fights Hatton, Wlad Klitschko fights Rahman... we'd have super-bout after super-bout, and boxing would flourish.

K-Dogg your on to something man, but to be honest I like to play a little devil's advocate and say we should downsize to two sanctioning bodies. So to have a bit of controversy as the champ (only a bit though, thats why I say two) and there could be some version of unification. That in all honesty is mroe feasible, but I truly do want to see a one champ system. The truth is that it will take a few high-profile fighters in the historically highest profile divisions (heavyweight, light heavyweight, middleweight, and welterweight) to make a personal stand against the sanctioning bodies and encourage commissions and promoters alike to ignore the alphabets. A perfect example of this alphabet chaos is the Juan Diaz and Joel Casamayor bit. And Mike Tyson and Michael Spinks had a similar deal back in the mid 80's. Sanctioning bodies are killing us and the truth is I have a few friends that are in various positions in the business and they focus almost solely on getting ranked and fighting for various belts. I understand regional titles for claims of pride, but that is about the extent of what belts there should be besides "The Ring".
