    Real Talk

JA: What’s good John? "Everything is going good. I am just driving up to Worcester right now to work with Jose for the fight and try to perfect the plan for the fight."

JA: Do you think that this is a make or break fight for Jose?

JS: Boxing is a funny game. There are a million examples of fighters, look at Verno Phillips for example, who lose and are written off and then somebody gives him an opportunity later on and then he wins the big fight. I try not to put the pressure on a guy and say this is your life on the line, but at the same time I do always say that "while you're here you should make the most of it and prepare for it like it’s going to be your last fight". You have to go in with that mentality because you never know what may happen, you may never get another shot.

JA: I know that trainers don’t like to give away their strategies but what flaws do you in the Alejandro Garcia?

JS: I don’t see him as being super talented. He fights hard and he is a better boxer than what he gets credit for. He looks like a strong puncher, but I don’t think that he is a puncher like Tommy Hearns who has one punch knockout power. I have seen him hit guys pretty solid and nothing happened, he has stopped a lot of guys from Mexico who may have suspect credentials. Jose has faced some tough punchers for instance in Teddy Reid so I don’t worry about Jose taking a punch as I might with some other guys. We're not going to stand there and trade bomb for bomb with the guy, anyway. We are going to have to be smart and execute a game plan that offsets what he does.

JA: After Jesus lost to Luis Collazo and now Collazo is getting his big shot at Ricky Hatton. Do you feel that if Jose had won the fight against Collazo that he would be getting the big fight against Ricky Hatton?

JS: Probably so, sure, but Jose had a terrible time making 147 pounds so I think the move to 154 was going to happen whether he beat Collazo or not. With the guys up at junior middleweight, you have guys like Mosley, Mayorga, De La Hoya, Vargas that is definitely the region that you want to be in. If Jose wins this fight he will have what De La Hoya, Mayorga and Mosley all want. He will be in some type of control. Whoever wins this fight has something lucrative on the horizon.

JA: A lot of people are probably just hearing about Jose. Why is he getting in the lime light right now?

JS: He is the type of guy who defines the word perseverance. He has been a pro for a while now, for about 12-14 years. He has stayed with it, he went to Germany and pulled off an upset and when you beat a guy over in Germany who is 38-0 I don’t care who it is that is an accomplishment. His perseverance is paying off.

JA: How is Mike Oliver doing?

JS: They are trying to get something for Mike-Mike, they are going to be getting that finalized in the coming weeks. From what I understand he is going to be on another Fox TV show in June. We are also working on getting Pito Cardona some work. The gym is going good, everything is going really good. I am really anxious to get Mike-Mike back in the ring because he had an eye opening win his last fight. I really want to get his name out there so he can move up the rankings quickly at 122 pounds.

    Hmmmm....

JA: Ron Lipton recently talked to me and he was telling me about how you stated in your book about the problems with officials in the game of boxing. Can you emphasize a little bit more about the referees in boxing?

JS: I think that a lot of officials in general, I think that boxing is a funny sport and I think that a lot of officials shouldn’t be officials because they are not qualified. I think that is something that needs to be addressed by the powers that be. I am not going to mention any names but I know judges personally who have absolutely no business in being a judge. I know this one guy in particular, I knew him before he became a judge, and I knew his lack of background and his point of view on certain things that we talked about, I thought that his point of view was kind of warped. One time I was in a corner with a fighter and I was looking around the ring to see who the judges were and this guy was judging the fight. The other two judges had the other guy winning by a landslide and this judge had the eventual loser winning every round. That was par for the course with him. There are a lot of judges and referees that I don’t think are capable of being officials who are, basically, in a position to make or break a mans professional career. There is nothing really holding people back from becoming a judge or inspector. There are some guys who are inspectors and I know a few of them and I talk to them and I am saying to myself "these guys don’t have a clue about boxing." These guys are sometimes politically appointed people or they know somebody to get their way in there. A lot of times people ask me “How do I become a judge?” and I say "Trust me it’s not as hard as it looks."

JA: Is it more common sense?

    JS: What do you mean?

JA: It’s really not hard to see if a guy won a round or not?

JS: Being a judge is not quite that simple as to just watch a fight and score a fight, you have to know who is really winning a fight and why. It’s not a thing where we learn about the sweet science in school. People who judge something has to know about the sport, who is really winning and why and, honestly, a lot of these guys really don’t know, more than I can even stress. It’s just crazy to me that these people are in charge of a mans future when they don’t have any business being there. Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that all judges are bad because most of the judges are very good. Take the Whitaker-Chavez fight, though, for example, everyone knows that Sweet Pea won that fight hands down but there were judges there that scored the fight a draw. Someone there actually had Chavez winning that fight and if you look at the fight I can’t see anyone scoring that fight for Chavez. Yet, officially appointed professional judges took that fight from Sweet Pea. If you take an umpire in baseball or a referee in the NFL, any one of them on the field, for example, and you know that they are qualified and knowledgeable people and the fact of the matter is that you can’t say that in boxing. It is definitely a problem that needs to be addressed.

JA: Do you think that boxing is at its high point, medium point, or low point right now?

JS: I would say it’s probably at a medium point right now.

JA: Do you think that it could ever get to a high point?

JS: I don’t know. With the way the world being the way it is now with the technological age, internet and things like that. The kids are not getting into boxing like they used to get into boxing, its no secret that a lot of the amateur tournaments have seen a significant drop off in the last 10-15 years. The competition level is not at a high and it trickles up to the pros where the fighter is not as qualified and gets rushed to the professional ranks. Let’s put it this way, guys outside of the heavyweight division in big fights make four or five million dollars today. Tommy Hearns and Ray Leonard fought in the unification bout and they both received ten million dollars, that’s how big boxing was backing then in 1981. Guys on that level don’t make ten million in a fight anymore and this is twenty-five years later. When Tommy Hearns and Ray Leonard fought I was in junior high school and all the kids were talking about the fight and one kid was even wearing a “Showdown” T-shirt on the day of the fight. I don’t think that too many 12 year olds around the country are talking about that Mayorga-De La Hoya fight coming up. Let’s put it this way: When Hagler was the champion of the world I believe that he could walk through any major city and on the street a significant amount of people would say “Hey, there’s Marvin Hagler.” Now I would have to say some of the top middleweights in the world from 2006 can walk down the same street and I don’t think they would get a second look.

JA: Do you think that boxing needs a Federal commission?

JS: Well I think that it would be a good thing but I think that it would be too hard to do because a federal commission would hamper boxing. If a federal commission tried to do everything 150% the right way, you wouldn’t see any 20-0 fighters; you wouldn’t see guys being built up in their home areas because they would be forced to fight the high level of opposition. I don’t think that it could be done because there is a lot of money involved and there are a lot of high powered people involved. It’s a different kind of sport and I don’t think you can regulate it like you can with team sports like the NFL, NBA, and MLB.

JA: What do you think of the De La Hoya-Mayorga fight?

JS: To tell you the truth, and I think that I speak for a lot of people, I couldn't care less. I am not going to watch the fight. I don’t care who wins and I have no interest in the fight. Mayorga gets blasted by Tito and he gets rewarded by going for the vacant title, I think that it’s ridiculous. When you go for a vacant title, the two best fighters in the world are suppose to fight for that vacant title and to say that he was one of the two best fighters in the world at 154 pounds after coming off a brutal KO loss is pretty amazing to me. De La Hoya, he is Oscar and that is why he is in the fight just because he is Oscar. I think that he is more business oriented than he has ever been, talking like a promoter more than ever, and I don’t think that it’s a super fight like they want people to think it is. I think that the fight is more a business fight and I am just not interested in the fight at all.

JA: Is there anything that you would like to say in closing?

JS: I know that a lot of people are emailing me from around the world asking me about my book and it's frustrating for me because I have been telling people that it will be done in a couple of months, but I have been telling people that for a year now. It’s unbelievable because I could remember telling people a year ago “Don’t worry, the book (The Iceman Diaries) will be done in about two months.” On one hand things keep popping in my head that I want to talk about and on the other hand with all the action that has been going on with training fighters, sparring and with my one year old baby Sarita, it's been hard to concentrate at times. I have been trying to free up my schedule in the next couple of weeks so I can get time during the day to focus on the book. I am not going to promise people anything anymore but I can say that it's coming and I think that my book will draw a lot of attention when the time comes. I think that fight fans will really want to read this book.

I almost immediately an email after this came out from a judge I know... he was not pleased...but I stand by EVERYTHING I said.

After reading that you thought Tony Thornton was robbed against Eubank, your a pretty damn **** judge yourself Scully

Damn, seriously, what fight were you watching?? I gave Thornton two or three rounds at most, and that was only because Eubank chose those as lazy rounds.

          You're discussing bad judging?

The same guy that claimed Harry Simon beat Winky Wright's ass the entire fight?

From what I remember, Wright did well for five or six rounds but then got out-hussled (and lost clearly).

I couldn't help but feel sorry for Steve Collins in the McCallum fight, when there was a close-up of him in the corner after one of the rounds and Collins is trying to hide his GOOFY teeth for the ESPN camera's.. Lol!! And trying to hide the pain from McCallum's body shots too. I bet Goody was trying not to laugh at that goofy, gangly, ginger loser.

Oh and Michael Nunn told me to tell you Scully that you punched like a little girl, and that you wouldn't of laid a glove on him five years earlier.

(I'm just joking with you apparently you were robbed that night??)
