  • Comments Thread For: Examining the James DeGale-Porky Medina Scorecards

One of the announced scores for James DeGale vs. Porky Medina was incorrect. Originally, the announcement was that two judges (Steve Gray and Tony Paolillo) had it 117-111 for DeGale while a third (John Madfis) had DeGale ahead 115-113. The nine rounds-to-three margin seemed too wide for those observers who saw a closer bout. But the official scoresheet compiling the judges' scores had made a mathematical error in the final round, which Gray had given to Medina. That made his scorecard 116-112, not 117-111.

I watched the BoxNation broadcast (streaming online) and I didn't like the logic behind scoring the fight for DeGale. The British broadcasters were giving rounds to DeGale based on "class" despite the fact that Medina was out-working and out-landing DeGale for 2 out of the 3 minutes. They deemed the showy uppercuts and clean blows that DeGale landed enough to award him the entire round. They kept harping on about his "pure class" and said that judges were free to award rounds based on "class" and boxing skill even if Medina was the more effective and aggressive fighter. I don't agree with this and I think the fight was a draw at best. DeGale is better off hitting and moving. He is definitely strong and skilled, but he didn't come mentally prepared for the fight.

Bottom line, bad judging. Look at both fighters afterwards. The one busted up barely won, or it was a draw. Really no excuse even for the 116-112 score.

If only fights were scored on facial bruising, hell why do the judges even watch the fight, why dont they just take facial scans and count the marks and colour. A computer could score it thus:~ m x c x d =w
            where m is marks/bruises
c is change in colour on average
d is distortion from the face
            w is the winner

            No sarcasm intended...

Watching this fight with no sound, every round was close, but degale was edging most of them with the flashier combos and cleaner power shots, Porky's brawling and wild misses didn't look good, and although he was landing as many shots as degale tothe body especially, the judges are never convinced(wrongly) if the body shots don't have an effect. Degale by a couple, but i can see if they scored more of the close rnds to degale it could be wide.
