Did he or didn't he?

I would say he did, yes.
He was hurt but not enough for it to be impossible to come back from.
He makes eye contact with the referee, gets too his knees then 'acts' as though he is scrambled and falls back onto his hands? Gets up, looks across the ring, probably at Berto who is most likely poising himself for an assault, looks back at the referee who says "Do you want to continue? Look at me", to which he then looks away and to the floor...Is that what you do when asked that question and are told to look back at someone?
He might not have made it as clear as Chad Dawson virtually agreeing with the idea of being stopped (vs Ward) but he definitely didn't want to know anymore so he threw out the type of body language that he thought would look 'realistic'. Simple as.Comment

That uppercut had Ortiz reconsidering the decision to even put the gloves back on; he had the gumption to try and get up to keep fighting, but the moment Berto put hands on him again, he weighed things out in his mind and quit (think Ortiz-Maidana).
When Ortiz is bossing the fight and doing his thing, he looks like a super talent; the moment he starts to take fight-changing damage, that quit instinct kicks in.Comment

Well he did quit, but I think he was also quite hurt. He was physically capable of continuing, but not in a meaningfully competitive sense. Ref should have stopped the fight, he didn't even make the count.Comment
