Comments Thread For: Hearn Defends Anthony Joshua vs. Dominic Breazeale
Anthony Joshua is one of three heavyweight world titleholders. His next opponent is not seen by an overwhelming majority of boxing observers as being anywhere near that level. [Click Here To Read More]
Breazale is undefeated, I like the idea of Joshua fighting him first and then Wilder or Fury after. So he keeps up his KO streak against undefeated fighters. His last 3 victims were undefeated, so is his next and likely also the one after that. Looks damn good on the resume.
"He's a pay-per-view fighter in the United Kingdom."
Only cos you say he is, you slimy snake oil salesman.
AJ's fight with Whyte did good numbers, mainly because it was a grudge match that had built up over some period of time, and also because Eubank-Spike was a very good chief support. Mitchell, Bellew and Campbell on the card also helped drive the buy rate. In and of itself, Joshua v Whyte was no more than a domestic grudge match for a domestic title. Should never have been PPV in a million years.
The AJ-Martin card was diabolically bad. Only decent fight on the whole card was Selby v Hunter, and that was pretty one-sided. Main event was a predictable blow-out of one of the worst HW champs in history.
Now, predictably, we are being told AJ is "a PPV fighter" and all his fights are going to be on PPV. This didn't even happen with Lennox Lewis! When he fought Rahman the first time, it was on BBC! There were quite a few other Lewis fights that were on regular Sky, including the Briggs and Grant fights. Yet we are being told Anthony Joshua fights exclusively on PPV nowadays. Jesus wept.
Well Hughie Fury's opponent last night arguably beat AJ's next opponent, yet it's a PPV fight.
I don't blame Hearn and co. If they can get that PPV money then fair play to them but it's just proof that 99% of people who watch AJ don't know the first thing about boxing and happily shell out money to watch him fight the likes of Breazeale.
It doesn't really matter who he fights now, his fanbase wouldn't know the different between a guy like Breazeale or Luis Ortiz or something. They aren't going to be demanding good opponents for their money because they don't even know anything about boxing.
So by that token, unless it's a huge money fight i.e Joshua v Fury, he will continue to fight very easy mandatories because it isn't going to make a difference if he fights a tough opponent or easy fight, the money will be the same because his fanbase don't know/don't care.
They have done a hell of a job with him in terms of generating money without really proving anything.
It is a first defense so I can understand it being a winnable fight, generally that would be a more veteran guy but against another up and comer (even if he appears to be a stiff) is also fine.
I think it would be better if he fought a tough durable vet that might teach him a thing or two while he is still teachable but maybe Breazeale has more to him than I think he does.
Kilrain very accurate breakdown. I feel the same towards the Snake hearn.
Deathofaclown Also good comment. I'm from the UK and it drives me crazy to work with 40+ men and listen to 95% of them talk **** about boxing. They actually laugh at me as if Im the crazy one. Yet they are the one who believe in undefeated fighters with nothing joke records, salita v khan haye v de mori proves that. They buy tickets and ppvs and eat it up and come back saying **** like hes gonna be the greatest ever.... smh
I said 2 years ago Fury will be the next UK world heavyweight champion and first to beat Wlad on this decade. I also said Joshua will get fed a journeyman for a world championship title
