As a foreigner, I can attest that you're 100% wrong. Learning a different language in your 30s = extremely difficult. He's right about where he should be considering he's been in the US for 4 years.

You also have to realize that he tries to be both honest and political at the same time. It's very easy to say something ****** in those situations, even when you're a native speaker. He doesn't want to mess anything up so he keeps to the same phrases.

it has improved... its not great but his learning language ability is probably better than 99% of NSB posters... considering this is like someone said his 4+ language and he is a fighter not an academic.
