RJJ! He was a decent basketball player too!
For me that was the most blatant and obviously clear robbery in the ENTIRE history of boxing

Roy Jones Jr. accomplishments before the Tarver fight are unaffected by what happened after. He was an amazing fighter!

Let's hope he retires now while he still has his health.

That's great to know man. It looks like you had a lot of fun.

Funnily enough, I was reading excerpts of "The Iceman Diaries" just last week, where you spoke of Roy's road to the Olympics, and how you saw Roy the morning after the Toney fight after he'd been for a run. I found it fascinating.

A quick question if you don't mind?

Did Gerald McClellan ever fight Frankie Liles and Tim Littles in the amateurs?

        Thanks.

I was living in Japan then, watching my fellow American put on a boxing clinic, Park had no business making it that far in the competition. Once The decision was rendered, NHK sports announcers went crazy. They had a few Japanese pro boxers commenting and they broke it down Japanese style, with micro precision.

さぎ (fraud) was what they kept repeating.

          being cheated hurt him bad!!

i'm not saying roy was at his best but he shold have been better and healthier int he second fight if he prepared right. if he didn't thats his fault and also if you watcch the 2nd fight he was looking super sharp, just got caught.

i wish you had known about that type of weigth loss in the ward-dawson fight but you both go paid so that's the important thing.

Roy was healthier in the second fight. He'd had more time to prepare and he'd rehired Mackie Shilstone. But he was in a position where he had nothing to gain and everything to lose. The fight he really wanted at that time was a mega money fight with Tyson.

He had nothing to prove against Tarver. I never understood the controversy of the first fight. Although it was close, Roy won it clearly in my opinion, even though he was exhausted and running on fumes for the last 3 rounds. If you go back and watch the fight, you'll see Buddy McGirt constantly asking a despondent Tarver why his instructions hadn't been carried out.

Regarding Tarver's knockout, you have to give him full credit for that. But you have to wonder if Tarver could have landed that shot against a peak version of Roy.

It's hindsight, but I just wish Tarver had beaten Harding in their 2000 eliminator so Roy could have fought him 3 years earlier than he did.

Some people see him now and actually seem to really believe that he was never any good to begin because of the way his career has went for the last 11 years.

But THINK about what I'm telling you: Until he was 35 YEARS OLD and a 50 fight veteran who had already been a pro for 15 YEARS when he got stopped by Antonio Tarver, this guy was pretty much one of the most untouchable dynamic forces boxing had ever seen.

He was fighting professionally for 15 YEARS before his slide began.
Roy made it look easy and his detractors were waiting for his downfall...they hoped it would happen to floyd but he didnt let his pride get in the way and went out on top. Jones went fights without losing rounds. Sometimes Years. Jones was absolutely the best fighter i ever saw. Greatness is different variables but I wouldnt favor anyone from 154-168 over a prime Jones. Skills and talent wise he is better than anyone IMO

IMO Roy couldve retired after Ruiz or Tarver 1 but pride and money gets in the way.....the first round of Tarver 2 was our last view of Jones with his complete confidence. Got hit with a shot he didnt see coming and his own shot landed first.

He took some hellacious lefts and right hooks and didnt budge. This fight sapped his punch resistance IMO.

When he was younger he got hit clean and didnt budge. after that beating and the prolonged one from Johnson where he was gun shy, it was a wrap.

Confidence gone(his greatest strength was he never doubted himself or hesitated could antcipate the next move)
