He was in a very bad motorcycle accident back in 2001 where he fractured his skull and underwent surgery before he started his pro career. The major bodies didn't want to sanction his fights as result and it prevented him from getting bigger fights. However, he was later signed by Golden Boy and was actually scheduled to fight on HBO, but a subsequent brain scan meant he wasn't allowed to fight in the US. He was then cleared to fight in the US in 2008 but then he furthered his downward spiral outside the ring and the rest is history.
