    What happened to the jab

It seems that a lot of the fighters throw a feel'em out flicker jab ..in this spence fight I saw about 10 real meaningful jabs ( at best ) .. If these fighters should take anything away from current greats like pac , Floyd , GGG, Ward, Kovalev is a stiff and accurate jab with a purpose .. The core setup for all shots , feints and in/out work .. I gues my question is are there any guys in the forums who work with good trainers or watch a lot of fighters work with their coach ..? Do they ever preach the jab or just a touch jab .. Where did this beautiful punch go ?

manny is no role model for stiff and accurate jabbing.

You need variation when throwing the jab, the touch jab is the most effective jab against Pacquiao for example, where as stepping in with it proved more ineffective when Cotto tried it. You just need to variate but some people don't even have a decent arsenal of the jab.

This guy gets it. There's a lot of people who don't deeply know the sport, and when they want to seem like they know what they're talking about during a fight they yell "Throw the jab son, throw the jab!" Commentators do this often and Paulie Malignaggi the only person I've ever heard talking about jab variation.

Stepping in and throwing a hard jab at the same speed, over and over again, will get you countered by a good fighter. Think Mayweather's pull counter, or look at Lomenchenko vs Russell Jr. You're not going to get away with throwing the same punch with the same speed against elite level fighters.

There's a lot more to using the lead hand than the jab. As I was watching Errol Spence fight last night, I kept thinking, "It would really benefit southpaws to watch Rigondeaux use his lead hand."

It can be used to measure. Control the other person's lead hand. Blind them. Move them into position to land a power shot. It's frustrating to repeatedly get touched in the face whether it hurts or not. There's many ways to use the lead hand.

That's next level stuff that most fighters don't do. I would like to see fighters use their lead hand more, but not only to step in with a stiff jab.

Well put .. It seems somewhere along the way the art of using your lead hand has disappeared.. In my opinion it starts in the amateur system which is garbage now .. No teachers in the game just guys to hold pads and remind you to slip after that oh so lazy jab.. I won over 49 fights I can remember in the ams with my lead hand alone ..Ward is a prime example of what to do with a lead hand .. Jab .. Feint .. Control .. Turn an opponent..nullify shots .. It's saddening more fighters aren't using these tools

simply touching your opponent is just a lot easier and the judges will give you the same amount of points so why not just do that? also commiting to a power jab leaves you open to get hit more and people usually don't like getting hit. for example floyd was lightly touching pac with his hand and that was scored as a clean punch so why not do that? over half of floyd's punches were jabs while 90 percent of pacs were power shots but if people are going to score them the same quality then just do the easier thing. its a lot easier to lightly touch someone then hit them flush with a power shot but it doesn't matter when it comes to scoring(if you are the a-side) don't try this if you are the b-side of course.

Here you are giving Pac tools he doesn't have.

Boxing I think goes through its cycle of preferred fighting styles. This newer generation seems to be going back to setting up combos off the jab which is great, thats how the best KO's happen like in the 70s and early 80's. One of the best set-up jabs ive seen recently was Vargas stoppage of Ali. Vargas used his jab perfect against a quicker fighter by varying it to the chest and head, set up the cross perfect. I tell my boys, if u feel u land a solid jab, u better make sure u follow it up.
