For me, Rocky will never be beaten and by that, I mean the original Rocky from 1976. The sequels tried but never lived up to the original. In the first film, he proved he wasn't just another bum. In the sequels he had new mountains to climb(literally in Rocky IV) but they didn't have the same impact for me.
I was impressed with Creed recently. I liked the story and the Adonis character, although I don't like him as much as Rocky Balboa, but I don't really think we are supposed to. Rocky's dumb wit and big heart win everybody over. So Adonis was in over his head there. However, I loved the fight scene with Gabe Rosado. The camera was so in the action and never cut away. That was amazing to watch.
Raging Bull has great acting, but I must say that all the profanity gets tiring. The fight scenes are hard to beat though and I have no doubt that DeNiro could have definitely been a good, maybe great, boxer. He moved so quick and turned into his punches so well. I wonder what would have happened had he walked into a boxing gym instead of acting class first.
I thought Ali was a bit too political and Michael Mann's direction leaves things to be desired at times. There's always this sort of slow moving quality to all of his films and while that works for some, I didn't think it did for this one. However, they did nail it in recreating the Foreman-Frazier fight. Looked just perfect, although I think James Toney might have too much attitude to play Joe Frazier. Haha.
Cinderella Man was excellent in just about every way. The action in the ring looked great and Russell Crowe moved so much like James Braddock. When I watched films of the real Braddock, I thought 'Wow. They nailed it.' They also nailed Max Baer, in the ring. Outside the ring, obviously he wasn't the jerk they portrayed him as. I suppose they needed him to be as villainous as possible, but Baer's son along with many others, claimed that Max was not the cold-blooded monster they made him appear to be.
The Fighter impressed me quite a bit with its acting and the gritty side it showed to Lowell's streets. The fighting was also excellent. I highly recommend it to any boxing fan. I also found it interesting that Mickey Ward and Mark Whalberg have the same initials.
Somebody Up There Likes Me starring Paul Newman as Rocky Graziano is a film that is very underrated IMO and should get more attention that what it does. Newman plays the troubled young Graziano as he goes from an AWOL soldier and more or less a rebellious hooligan to champion of the world. It's a really great story and the fight scenes are dated, but I feel effective.
Million Dollar Baby is great the second or third time you see it. The first time, you will probably just want to shoot yourself at the end. It is a real downer. However, the fighting was impressive and for Eastwood to make a film about a woman boxer was very ambitious. It's a dark and down movie, but it actually is beautiful in its own way.
The Boxer was Daniel Day-Lewis is a good film and has a very good message about referees not stopping a fight soon enough. I think it shows some pretty dark sides to the sport but hey. It's Daniel Day-Lewis. So you know the acting is great. And the fighting isn't bad either.
There are others I have seen but these are the ones that stand out in my head. There's nothing better than a great boxing movie.Comment
