He got the fight he wanted. All you can hope for now is that he shows up and puts on a show. Even in a losing effort he can increase his stock if he shows out.

      I doubt that.

We're in a very fickle age in Boxing (in all sports really).

Have to pull ya up on something there Ram. Lets us try to avoid bringing statistics into boxing. We need more boxers like Sam Sollman who don't care about stats - and also fans who don't care either. This is a serious factor in our sport heading downhill in my opinion. Boxers protecting their record is half the reason we don't see the big fights we should.
In Sams 3rd fight he had a crack at someone who had 25 fights (17-5-3). He lost, but that's the sort of stuff legends are made from. If he didn't aim for the top, he wouldn't have twice beaten Felix Sturm in Germany.

After all, it's better to have tried and failed than to not have tried at all...
I was talking (well more making an offhand comment) about Wade building a reputation on less than stellar opposition and being suprised that he's such an underdog but still, your point stands and it's a good one at that.

I think we've almost got into a kind of double bind here where an undefeated record is both devoid of any real meaning because the fighters advisors have them following a career path of avoidance, whilst at the same time it becomes paramount because once it's gone, the truth of the matter has been brought into the light. Chiefly that the fighter is in a position (as Champion or high ranking contender) that is unwarranted and is only possible because the structure of the sport is geared towards a proliferation of paper champions representing a farcical multitude of governing bodies.

A loss, like you say, should be a signal that a fighter is stretching himself whilst learning a craft that can more often than not be a lifelong process. Unfortunately unbeaten records and losses are now more about the spin and counter spin of selling a product.

Without a single or at the most two unifying organisations I don't see how where ever going to get out of this dilemma.
