  • Did Floyd Mayweather's fights with Maidana take a lot out of him?

I rewatched their fights today and it looked like Mayweather took a lot of damage. He even said after the fight, "He hurt me."

Thoughts? Were the Mayweather-Maidana fights (esp. the first one) career-shortening boxing matches for Mayweather? To me it seems yes they were.

Maybe. Maidana gave him a tough night.

It still boggles my mind how Mayweather wasn't able to outbox Maidana. In fact, Maidana was actually outboxing Mayweather at certain points.

Maidana gave him a really rough first few rounds of the first fight because he made it ugly. But, he didn't hit him cleanly enough times to shorten his career.

Tony Weeks really blew it that night.

He fought 3 times since that first fight with Maidana and didn't show any signs of that fight taking anything out of him. Age took more out of him than that fight.

Best shot was in the second fight at the end of 3, interesting to see what would have happened if that was was in the beginning of the round.

His style was virtually unwatchable after that first fight. I dont think it affected him physically but it did mentally.

It's boxing, and every fight takes something out of every fighter. Particularly, however, I do think Mayweather took a lot of damage throughout the first Maidana fight. Nevertheless, Mayweather's known for not being hit and questionable opposition, so it's not the same as it would be for any other fighter. For most people, a fight of that nature could be the last nail on the coffin, career-wise. In Mayweather's case, it's one of the few fights in which he's actually taken significant damage. So, I don't think it affected him the same way.

Mayweather's looked great, appearing to cheat father time and somehow hushing the IV controversy as well. This is likely the apex of his career, right now. If he sticks around long enough, he'll surely experience a fall, but that's up in the air. He can still get out, if he is smart.

It's also still to be determined whether he'll get his act together or not. If he does, he could use his brand to continue to be rich for years to come. Retirement, again, is the best option. He can't lose; his antics would cost him, otherwise. And, of course, he would need to stop getting negative press.

If I were him, I'd take that #50 versus Pacquiao again. Then, I'm gone. I'd change my lifestyle a bit (enough to stay afloat, which in this case is the best realistic scenario) and wait for a year or two. His name will be forever connected to an aura of "invincibility" so by the end of that time, he can shop his name to the biggest deal out there. Then, I'd just follow the blueprint every iconic ball-player uses to get ridiculously rich after retirement. Most boxers can't get away with that. I think someone like Mayweather, if well behaved, could.

Problem is that Mayweather has an unquenchable taste for luxury.

Multiple low blows, multiple rabit punches, multiple karate chops, american football tackles, elbows, headbutts, and muo thai knees would take alot out of any fighter.
