But why does Ward need 2-3 more fights? I don't get that position at all. I think even one more fight is pushing it. The guy isn't a prospect. He is in his prime.
Ward/Kovalev if they want to have another fight before facing each other, will have to do it before June. After June they can only fight each other.

Kovalev is waiting, the fans are waiting and Ward says bla bla bla my team bla bla bla.
Kovalev is planning to have another defense in the summer prior to Ward, so I'd say another fight for Ward is fair game.

Ward looked good against Barrera but I'm not against seeing him against another reasonably solid opponent first.

If you can cleanly outbox Hopkins then you can probably cleanly outbox Ward, although both are very difficult tasks.

It's a close fight that could go either way but I just don't see Ward's advantage... The one thing he's very good at has been shown to have lackluster results vs Kovalev.

Meanwhile Kovalev's own stellar point-boxing isn't even his highlight feature, it takes a backseat to his scary power and accuracy.

              Well said.

People like to point out that B-Hop was well past it, and he was, but age doesn't affect your ring IQ, experience in the ring, ring generalship, or box. If affects things like conditioning, and the ability to take damage, and B-Hop is a fitness freak who takes tremendous care of himself. Context is everything, as per usual.

But the point is that Kovalev learned tons in that fight, and yes, when you are in the ring with guys like B-Hop and Floyd, you will learn a lot win or lose, and just simply being exposed to cerebral fighters like that prepares you in many ways to face other equally effective, quality fighters. One day Ward may be in that same boat, I don't have him there now, and the combination of Kovalevs experience today, and the fact that he has no real flaws, and is a crafty tactician himself, with a thirst for blood, I just see no real challenge to Kovalev. By that I mean no real threat. Ward would be his best win, but that's politics to me. I don't really rate Ward today over B-Hop when Kovalev fought him, even with the age disparity.

What I find hilarious about the praise Ward gets, is that it's largely based on the eye test, and his resume is marginally better than Golovkin, but guys like me get criticized for ranking GGG p4p #1 using the eye test as well. Double standards.

Kovalev could win if Ward made a mistake. Otherwise, Ward outboxes him in a fairly difficult fight. Looking at skills and speed, Ward is in a different class than Kovalev, but the massive power of Kovalev could cause an upset at any time.

When do you think it'll happen though? Ward looked rusty against Barrera, I don't mind if he gets another tune up in before the Kovalev fight.
