Comments Thread For: Luis Ortiz: HBO and Golden Boy Back Me, Big Fights Will Come

After knocking out durable contender Bryant Jennings last December, heavyweight Luis Ortiz (25-0, 22KOs) has seen the buzz about him skyrocket. Earlier this month he made his 2016 in-ring return as he knocked out veteran Tony Thompson in Washington, DC.

He wanted to learn how Thompson beat Solis? Easy, just go more to Mcdonalds than the gym. After not having the Cuban Olympic team's whip on his back his discipline out the window.

It comes as little surprise that so many Cuban fighters fail to reach the pinnacles expected of them as pros. However hard and consistently any child is raised on boxing, however constant the push from behind and environment placed around them, the Cuban system is one step further.
Then they move to a country where the life is so vastly different, where the choices available to them are laid out, easily affordable, encouraged by those around them as not only harmless but well earned.
So many other countries where it is harsh to grow up, such as my Philippine or Ugandan friends have told me, the options are out of reach but they're seen close to hand and the whole thing is fully grasped. But a buddy of mine came from Cuba, and to him, these choices weren't flashed in his face as a poor child, they were stories of away lands which may as well not have even existed.
Any of these Cuban guys who don't slip a fair way off the track, after being raised on an utterly insane intensity of training are something else indeed.
Christ, most guys born and raised in first world countries fall by the wayside through being afforded the temptations available. How many talented fighters have you seen slide to other things, or not reach the heights they were capable of?
For a Cuban to get lazy in training is not a fair comparison to say an L.A. guy getting lazy in training.
Anyways, I don't really have much of a point, am just bored. But I love the depth that Cuban fighters bring, however they perform, you know they've seen soooo much and have a wealth of experience in there., wether they bring it out or not.

The question about who the best heavyweight is will depend on when Ortiz takes on Wilder and T Fury. Ortiz is certainly in the top four.

His popularity is on the rise. Golden Boy and HBO will probably give him a huge push this year.

My guess is that he will fight 4 times this year. Hopefully by the end of the year he gets a Top 5 Heavyweight.
