My final thoughts go as follow. The fight was pretty much how I expected it would go, because we have to keep in mind Wladimir was fighting Chris Byrd. He doesn't have the punch to hurt him, and that's just awful. There is nothing Byrd does better than him, with the exception of duck punches.

The arsenal of punches Byrd was hit with reminded me of the Pre Sanders Wlad except the key difference this time...is he clinches a bit.

That's how Steward trained Lennox to protect himself and I must say....Steward and his new training influences are the best thing ever. At this point in time Wlad is fighting alot like Lennox did. Jabs, Nasty rights, and that little quick clinch.

I also agree with what Larry Merchant stated in there is nothing wrong with the way Wlad clinches. It's a fast grab, and he doesn't do it all that often.

I like the idea that he can do that against a guy that punches really hard, and he can stay on the outside landing the hard right hand. That's a frustrating style for anyone in the division to fight and it's only going to get better.

Credit Byrd for fighting like a man, putting his gaurd up and trying to wear WK out. It was a horror show, but he went out like a warrior, and even admitted it himself.

He's not on Wlad's level as a fighter, but he recieved a great payday and earned alot of respect.

All that stuff is great and I'm cool with Wlad's clinching against a Sam Peter.... When Wlad needs to clinch against Bryd, that just sucks.

          That's a routine man.

He was getting into the routine of clinching like that so that it becomes automatic. Working on Byrd is like practice when facing bigger punchers.

man,,,that reminded me a lot of lennox lewis. the way he kind of had his left hand out there to keep byrd at a distance and push him back and occasionally clinch briefly to get a rest. great coaching by steward and great execution by wlad. if he fights the same way against everyone else he has a good chance of keeping that belt for a while. the only guy I could see giving him big trouble is if he rematched peter again. because of peter's chin and right hand. I think he'd spank brewster in a rematch and easily kayo rahman who has no defensive ability or toney who just doesnt have the reach or power to trouble him

Your right. Steward has got that trained into instinct now.

I really don't know if I have ever seen a top fighter change this much, AFTER he became a champ.

                It still stands with me.

The guy I think could really trouble him is Danny Williams.

some people are clueless when it comes to clinching or holding. wlad was not holding against byrd,,,,he was clinching briefly. this technique is done to catch a brief rest. ali did it brilliantly throught his career. steward also had lewis doing it later in his career and it served him well

Vitali might give him a bit of trouble.

Come on man, You and I both know Williams aint giving Wladimir no trouble..Skelton beat him, Wladimir would pound him bad probably worse than Vitali did.

Williams has got a lot of heart, NO question...Lets see the Williams/Skelton rematch and If that is any good, then I might consider it.
