This is what I was going to say.
The way boxers are paid in boxing is strange to me.

I mean I understood why guys like Mayweather, Pacquiao, Cotto and DLH got paid a lot, they brought in the ratings.
But it boggles my mind how someone like Danny Jacobs and Peter Quillin can split 3 million, how LSC can get 1 million to fight Kiko, or how Crawford could make 1.2 million to fight Lundy? Seems like they over paid for those fights.

It's a great thing for boxers that Haymon created PBC. Much better potential to earn.

No more $15k main event purses on ESPN Friday Night Fights as well. That was embarrassingly low.

HBO used to have a $100 million budget in 1999.

Boxing might be the only sport in the entire world were license fees have actually decreased. That is embarrassing... thanks to old guys like Arum.
So old greedy Arum is the cause? You think HBO would pay 3-4 million per for a Hymen card?

This is the crux of the matter. Somehow, boxer's compensation got inflated.....not going to throw out names but you know who started that trend, and now it's crushing the sport. This isn't NBA or NFL, boxing doesn't have the same following. An NFL RB makes like 8-10 million a season or whatever and boxers want 2 million per fight, twice a year, even though the sport has 1/1000 the following that NFL does.

I agree. The question is how does this get fixed?
Is HBO doing the right thing by refusing fights that years ago would have been no brainers in order to send the message that they will no longer over pay for any fight? Or are they sending the message that they're pretty much getting out of the boxing game?

No one knows what HBO's budget really is, but if it has been reduced, that means we won't be forced to watch garbage like GGG vs. the bum of the month or that crap we watched on Saturday night. With fewer resources, they will be forced to show only matchups between top quality opponents. So, if their budget is being cut, that is a good thing for fans.

                    Not necessarily.

                    Top quality opponents cost money.

HBO is invested in certain fighters (Crawford, Golovkin, Kovalev, Gonzalez, etc.).

They can always just pay less for "opponents" and try to shift more expensive fights to PPV.

This seems to be their approach with Cotto's next fight.

I don't think the actual amount hasn't been reported, but Dan Rafael has written that HBO is facing a budget crunch, and that they're supposedly pushing Cotto to have his next fight on PPV so it doesn't eat into their budget.
