Comments Thread For: Chris Algieri's Promoter Sees Errol Spence As Tough Opponent

Chris Algieri will be the most accomplished opponent that amateur standout and rising pro contender Errol Spence has faced yet in the paid ranks. The same can't be said for Spence when it comes to Algieri's class of opposition, given that Algieri once shared the ring with Manny Pacquiao.

Nevertheless, Algieri's promoter acknowledges the fact that his fighter won't be in easy.

I hope Spence takes this fight seriously. It is a small step up but a step up nonetheless. I expect him to beat Algieiri decisively.

If Spence doesn't knock Algieri out then it will be a poor fight for him. If Algieri starts to brawl with Spence that is not going work at all.

Even the promoter is looking beyond the result to the moment when Algieri is front of a microphone and talking eloquently to some NBC interviewer in order to attract sponsorships. Trouble is that plan might go awry if De Guardia's client is on his way to hospital.

I think it's a pretty "big" step up. I put big in quotations because he might not be stepping up to fight an A fighter, but this is a very important fight for Spence. Algieri has fought Emmanuel Taylor, Ruslan Provodnikov, Manny Pacquiao, and Amir Khan. He's got some really good experience.

I expect Spence to win, but it won't be easy at all.

That's fair. I don't see it as a big step up because I don't hold Algieiri in high regard. The Manny and Khan fights he was the "opponent" there to lose though He deserves credit for the Khan performance.

I don't necessarily hold him in a high regard, but I do hold John David Jackson in a VERY high regard. Algieri and Jackson deserve a helluva lot of credit for the Khan fight for two reasons: 1. We know Algieri can follow through on a gameplan. 2. Jackson got Algieri to fight in a completely different style and have a lot of success with it.

Jackson will have Algieri ready. Now whether or not Algieri has the talent to hang with Spence is a different story, but this fight is going to show me a lot about Spence.

This is a great point. Algieiri has more experience now than he did a few years ago. This fight will tell us a lot about Spence and his potential.

I'm not sold on Spence yet. Have people been ignoring how easily he gets caught in exchanges? Wide stance trying to load up on every shot. He'll most likely win this fight but he's there for the taking. Chris is a smart fighter and I expect him to take Spence into deep waters. I'm halfway tempted to bet on Chris...
