Comments Thread For: AIBA's Move For Pros in Olympics Causing Heavy Debate

Top professional boxers will become eligible to compete in this summer's Rio Olympics under radical new proposals being pushed through by the sport's world governing body, AIBA.

      Help me out here.

Won't this lead to some seriously fucked up situations where a seasoned pro (maybe with no fights scheduled) can go to the Olympics and beat the shit out of a bunch of amateurs for the fun of it? Or am I way off base.

A seasoned pro isn't going to go to the Olympics and fight for free, with the possibility of losing to an amateur which would be bad for his image. IMO

Why not? It happens in Tennis all the time.

they can already do that in pro boxing and get paid a few million (see garcia vs salka)

why would they do it for free especially when theyd probably get upset at some point in a tournamanent format

it's safe to say the top olympic amateur in the world has more fight in them than rod salka and even a washed up andre berto

also factor in drug testing, sponsor conflicts, etc... all for pennies on the dollar

At least if this passes we won't have to wait 5 years to see a decent matchup between the best fighters in a division....we'll only have to wait 4.
