I think if HBO does the rematch with Estrada and a Ruenorong fight we as fans can't really complain. After these fights, assuming he wins, then he can move up.

That said, I don't know if he will ever get to 122.

          Gonazalez has skill w/ power

He's big for his weight class and won't seriously be challenged until he gets to 120 lbs he's fought some good fighter w/ good pedigree but he's just to strong and big.

Nice post. Unfortunately, a lot of modern boxing fans share this sentiment and are ignorant about boxers fighting at or near their division limit and weight classes in general.

Right. It's funny cause everyone is saying he should move up to fight Rigondeaux as if there aren't enough challenges for him from 112 to 115 alone. Let's look at their stats.

              Guillermo Rigondeaux : 5'4 with a 68" reach

              Roman Gonzalez: 5'3 with a 64" reach

They both have styles that should mesh well together however when you have someone as gifted and skilled as Guillermo whom fights from a distance and has genuine power along with his counter punching technique plus reach and height advantage... Well, Roman is pretty screwed. He will be at a 4 inch reach disadvantage against a counter puncher whom thrives at a distance and would have an extremely difficult time cutting the distance without eating a few big shots in the process.

Gonzalez rehydrates at around 124 to 127 lbs fighting at 112, he may be rather big and heavy for his weight division but I doubt he would be able to carry his power, speed and stamina all the way to 122. I've said it before and I will mention it once more, I think Roman remains world class at 115 and 118 would be a challenge. Personally I believe 122 would be a stretch.

In fact Roman recently said he'll be going after the 115 division soon and if possible, if all goes well he might even consider 118 at some point in the future. He might be able to achieve things at bantamweight but I doubt anything past that limit, at least at a world class level.

Guillermo fans are so thirsty for their man to actually do something worthwhile they are literally hoping a 112 pound fighter whom has already moved up 3 divisions in his respective career will be dragged up 10 pounds from his current weight . Remember when Nonito was bashed for picking on smaller fighters when fighting at super bantam? Well, the hypocrisy of the matter is lost in fandom at some point.

Guillermo should focus on fighting a live body in his own division. If he's as small as everyone claims he can even drop to 118 and take on good names such as Payano, Yamanaka, McDonnell or any other top ten 118 fighter. Or he can try waiting further to see if Roman even reaches 118 while moving down and keeps his fingers crossed hoping to land a shot at the current PFP champ. the delusion is real.

If Roman is asking for 2 million dollars to even rematch Estrada at 112, what leads anyone to believe he would even consider a Rigondeaux clash in the future is beyond me.

Seriously, Gonzalez has a handful of really good fights to make at 112 and 115. Why in the world would anyone mention 122? That's ridiculous at the moment.

Great post, totally agree. Honestly, Roman's max would probably be around 115-118. I doubt he could go any higher than that.
