Comments Thread For: Roach: Forget Canelo-GGG, Golden Boy Won't Chance That

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach does not expect a middleweight showdown between Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0-31KOs)and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) to take place in the fall.

The fight will only happen if GGG agrees to 155. Golden Boy will have to dish out a crap load of money for GGG to budge from his 160 stance. I doubt they will able to so I say Roach is right. I disagree however with him thinking Cotto won.

Every time I see that photo I'm amazed that anyone can defend Canelo as being too small to fight at MW - tip of the hat towards Oscar here.
This was taken 3-4 years ago I believe. At that time Canelo was 21-22 yrs old and Golovkin around 30 yrs old.
Just look at the upper body of Canelo. It is wider than G's body from the waist, the chest and the shoulders. If G's body is the body of a MW then frankly we are looking at a super middle weight when we size up Canelo.

Unlike most, I know this fight will happen. Remember the canelo-Lara fight--canelo team did not want the fight but canelo demand it. I think the same will happen here. Canelo seems adamant that he wants to fight GGG, only obstacle I see is the weight they'll fight in. I say they'll do it at 157

I don't think anyone is saying he's to small for middleweight. It's that he's never actually fought a middleweight which is true. He's been a 154 who couldn't make 154 anymore so now he's at 155 lol. I think canelo have the body to go to lhw later in his career. He's really thick.

Roach is not someone to talk, he's the ultimate cherry picker. He looks for every advantage possible.

Poor Roach must be really losing it. That fight with Cotto wasn't close at all. Cotto would try and flurry like a mad man after getting caught but nothing was landing. Time to hang em up Freddie. He should ride off in the sunset with his boy Pacquiao.
