What do world title belts actually mean?

World titles are more reference points than anything else nowadays. Before they used to be a measure of being the best fighter in your division as others have mentioned. Now it just means that you are a pretty handy. Don't get me wrong bad fighters don't win world titles, but the world title is more a platform to launch you into a unification or a "big fight", it normally isn't the big fight in itself unless it involves a high profile fighter. In previous eras it was the end game, the pinnacle, now its not.
The more positive side to it today is that it generally puts fighters in a position to earn a minimum pay level of 6 figures, which is important. I think that is the only good thing which has come out of multiple sanctioning bodies, the flip side to that coin is multiple sanctioning bodies.Comment
