  • Comments Thread For: Buster Douglas, Mike Tyson - and dubious 20-something decisions

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Buster Douglas and Mike Tyson had another birthday this week.

    They turned 26.

And while consoling myself to the idea I'm old enough to clearly recall an event a more than a quarter-century ago, part of me still reacts with the same slack-jawed shock I displayed upon initially learning the fateful Tokyo result in real time back on Feb. 11, 1990.

It's only been 26 years, but, in context, it feels like the Stone Age.

Danny Williams was a good fighter at the time. McBride was a lower level journeyman. Bit cheap as always Lyle. I'm glad you're getting older.. getting closer to the end too.

I for one can't remember where I was, because I wasn't born yet. I don't think I was even a thought in my parents mind. But I can't think of a bigger upset in modern boxing and I doubt there ever will be. When you factor in everything about it, it's mind blowing really.

Buster KO of the Evil Tyson was Heartrendering and good

Buster's KO of the de****able violent rude crude arrogant ignorant Mike Tyson was a gift to boxing and the world from Heaven.

That was a crazy fight. Tyson in recent years admitted that he hardly trained for that fight. He was doing drugs and going through the turmoil of divorce from Robin Givens. Buster on the other hand, had just lost his mother & dedicated the fight to her memory. It was the best that I had ever seen Douglas fight.

Hi Lyle, I'm sure you read comments to your article once in a while and this one has few comments so I hope you do.
While shocking, Buster's KO or the perceived invincible Tyson at the time should probably not come as a surprise looking back now.

I'm going to ask you what I ask a lot of Tyson's fans, can you name a couple of Hall of Fame fighters that Tyson beat in his prime other than washed up belt holders who were there for the taking?

Tyson's resume is littered with garbage tomato cans that shouldn't even be called pro boxers. Tyson was a one dimensional neanderthal that relied solely on his brute strength. His caveman fighting styles was suited for pure boxers like Holyfield, Lennox and even Buster Douglas at the time and even if we could go back in time and match Tyson against these guys he would still get destroyed.

His list of hit list is pure garbage and he doesn't even belong in the Hall of Fame. I challenge you to name a single fighter that Tyson beat that was worthy of anything. You can't.

Compared to someone like Floyd, Tyson is a joke. I am not a big fan of Floyd but from 2005 to 2014 every single fighter that Floyd beat was a legitimate sanctioned belt holder from one of the three organizations that run boxing. A bunch of them if not all are Hall of Famers or will end up in Canastota once they retire. Can anyone say the same thing about Tyson? I doubt it.

Look it was not a good time for HW Boxing. Tyson beat who was there. A young Tyson was not "a one dimensional neanderthal that relied solely on his brute strength" he was an aggressive counter puncher with excellent defense who relied on that defense to create offensive opportunities. Its a shame that we never got to see that version of Tyson against a great fighter or see how that version of Tyson would have matured had King not got a hold of him.
