This was exactly what I was going to post. Aside from Ortiz I don't think Mayweather has made anybody "Famous".

Maidana actually met the president of Argentina a couple weeks after his first fight with Floyd and I believe was even appointed by the Argentine president to some sort of informal position (sports ambassador or something like that) so yeah, the Floyd fights did greatly increase his popularity. I know a couple of Argentine women in the U.S. who know nothing about boxing (only sport they follow is soccer during the World Cup) and they intently watched both Maidana fights vs. Floyd...

Maidana had a big part to do with it. Floyd obviously brought the fans to watch but Maidana's performance made him memorable.

He crushed broner who was known as baby Floyd....Then roughed up Floyd enough for a rematch....I mean After the first fight Floyd didnt know if he had won that fight remb. look on his face during scorecards or when the crowd reaction after they were read.

Floyd gave him the platform to make his presence known. Before the Floyd fight, Maidana had already been the headliner for numerous main events. He was even going to be the PPV fight for Broner. He had been in some of the most action packed fights of the last decade, a true embodiment of what boxing is all about. Floyd gave him the platform, but it was up to Maidana to truly make himself known. Whether he ended up like Berto (he isnt more popular now than he was before) or not was up to him. He chose to give Floyd tough fights and therefore people still remember him as being a threat to anyone and a lot of fantasy fights arose from his performances. Even now most of us want him to stay retired but a part of us want him to get in shape and come back hungry, not just for money.
