The more i think about this fight the more i think it will happen. Don't get me wrong i am not calling for this fight to happen i just think it will happen, and it'll most likely happen either on the Canelo vs. Kahn PPV or no later than July.
Here is my logic behind why this fight will happen. We all know that GGG needs a big name to increase his marketability, we see through social media that the Khan and Canelo fight is getting a lot of attention, even though to the hardcore fan the fight doesn't make sense. The reason why its getting so much excitement is because of two big names coming into the ring together. Golden boy promotions knows this and if they are at all serious about making the Canelo vs. GGG fight they know that making GGG a bigger star will help the PPV numbers even more.
What better way to help build that fight then putting GGG with Hopkins who is on his way out but has that name recognition. Oscar did the same thing after his retirement, he came back and made floyd and Paquio bigger stars, it wouldn't be far fetched to consider that hopkins would also do something similar. We all know Hopkins will get in there with anyone, now GGG isn't part of their promotional brand but Canelo is so giving more exposure to this fight (if it happens).
Here is what happened so far.
1) Hopkins said his fight will be announced soon and he will be a big underdog (this can only really happen vs. a few people, GGG, Ward, Kovalev)
2) Loffler did mentioned that this fight is something they would consider
3) Canelo is being pressured hard to make the fight with GGG happen
Here is what will happen.
GGG vs. Hopkins will be announced, this fight will not be for the hardcore boxing fan but for the casual fan to try and build more interest in GGG vs. Canelo fight. Golden boy and Hopkins get 2 things. 1) they get a chance to build the GGG vs. Canelo fight more 2) if Hopkins wins then Canelo is off the hook and Hopkins retires* and sails into the sun set as one of the best fighters to ever lace them up. Glovkin gets a good payday, gets more popular with the main stream boxing fans. GGG vs. Canelo is signed and does about 1 million PPV buys with Canelo getting the lions share. Win or lose Canelo makes 15+ million and is happy camper.
Considering how starved team GGG is for a big name that if Golden boy offered them a plan of this nature then team GGG would jump on that without thinking twice. in fact Golden boy might even negotiate it as a two fight deal giving Canelo even more concessions like a catch weight or bigger share of the pie for Canelo, he is their cash cow after all.
