Comments Thread For: Here's One Vote For Another Bernard 'Alien' Hopkins Sighting

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Call it the Peyton Manning effect.

After spending my Sunday watching a 39-year-old secure as unlikely a football championship as I can recall in recent memory, I'm left a day later pondering the slow fades of other elder sports statesmen.

Joe Namath as a Ram. Willie Mays as a Met. Michael Jordan as a Wizard. Wayne Gretzky as a Ranger.

I wouldn't say Kovalev "didn't break a sweat" against Caparello. He was, after all, knocked down on a clean straight left and seemed frustrated for a few more rounds after that. Agnew also had him annoyed for a while.

it was the fact that B Hop was OLD and he SHOWED it durin' the fight.
i dont think anybody really thinks an even past prime B Hop who fought the Light HeavyWeight Antonio Tarver would lose to segey kovalev B Hop truly showed his age he couldnt pull his shots no more, no angles, no pivots we normally see wasnt even confident in his jab his reflexes had diminished ON TOP OF THE FACT that sergey kovalev is pretty good damn light heavy weight fighter trained by the man in the corner john david jackson who had a hand in training bernard hopkins whom also knew hopkins style thus kovalev came away with a steal when he acquired jdj bc jdj is an ANALYTICAL OBSERVER and studied under ****m Richardson so he KNEW the fighter he was goin' into the ring with
remember in the buildup he would constantly reiterate the BODY work to make him FEEL OLD. and in the fight he would ALWAYS CAUTION sergey to NOT get over confident bc hopkins has reserves and is waiting to set traps to me jdj was the X Factor in beating an old ass hopkins bc with jdj i think kovalev wouldve gotten overzealous tryin' to knock out B Hop and wouldve been runnin' into counters all day BUT under the tutelage of jdj was PATIENT with the pace and set his own tone and chose his shots wiser than most B Hops opponents and thus led him to victory
with that said B Hop is MY personal Fav fighter of the PAST Generation who's extended his generation into THIS generation and i dont think he can beat golovkin he's just TOO OLD.

Easy to say that but he schooled Beibut Shumenov in the fight prior to that to collect the WBA and they still called it a split decision

I guess the writer can't wait to see Hopkins fight again. I see BHop as the master of the grey areas in boxing. I mean the quasi-legal stuff along with the outright illegal tactics Hopkins uses.
Hey thats boxing but I don't have to like it. No doubt Bernard is a living legend but I wouldn't cross the street to see him fight.

kovalev clearly tripped over caparrelos foot. yes a punch landed at the same time but he went down because of the feet. how was he frustrated for a few rounds after that? he knocked caparrello down 3 times in the next round and the fight was over. ARE WE IN REAL LIFE?

i do. its just a bad style match up. hopkins struggled with taylor because of his good jab well kovalev has a great jab and much more behind it. he was even ready to counter hopkin's when he mounted his attacks unlike taylor which made the taylor-hopkins fights so close. once hopkins knew kovalev was countering him he became more tentative and the fight was essentially over. against taylor all he had to do was line taylor up right and he knew taylor wouldn't be able to counter him.

Well, it's been a while. The Caparello and Agnew fights were essentially stay-busy throwaways, so I'm probably thinking more of the Agnew bout when I say Kovalev looked a bit frustrated. I distinctly remember him looking a bit out of sorts until he finally poured it on after the halfway point.
