Score It! 7 Controversial Fights Scored

The Mayweather vs Castillo appreciation thread reminded me of this series of scoring controversial fights The Boxing Bulletin used to do about 7 years ago. They assembled a panel of Boxing Bulletin writers to judge the fights and explain their scores.

They did 7 fights, pretty nicely laid out and broken down. Wish they would have done more. Links below.

    They re-scored:
    1. Leonard vs Hagler
    2. Morales vs Barrera 1
    3. Holmes vs Witherspoon
    4. Nigel Benn vs Chris Eubank II
    5. Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez I
    6. Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez II
    7. Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Jose Luis Castillo I

So Castillo WAS robbed. The scorecards were a joke.

        Anek Hongtongkam: 116-110 Mayweather
        John Keane: 115-111 Mayweather
        Jerry Roth: 115-111 Mayweather

They wanted Mayweather to be the new champion. He already had everything in his favour back then...

Very balanced except for the Hagler-Leonard, you can tell the guys who scored for Hagler are way too emotional with their wording in that one.

The other fights seemed to be more of an honest review.

I agree in general with the consensus in the rest of the fights:

Morales Barrera was actually a super close fight and the only way you'd call it an unfair decision is if you let the ref's screw up with the knockdown stand. Also, most people being balanced here gave round 5 to Morales which is the fair score, Barrera basically landed one good combo, if you score this round for Barrera, you did it on body language, not on actual action. That said, the official score cards were a clear indication that Morales was Top Ranks chosen.

Spoon kind of letting his razor thin win slip in the end while looking the better man but not doing enough to decisively pull it off.

              Don't remember how I had Benn-Eubank II.

I thought there was no way Marquez lost more than 4 rounds in the first fight, and that means he wins. And here no one had Pacquiao winning.

The second fight was always the closest to me on a round by round basis and here the writers were split.

And basically admitting that while Mayweather-Castillo was competitive, you had to bend over backwards in every close round to have Mayweather pull it off. Much less the margin of the victory that Top Rank bought him

that was evident as soon as the final bell rang to most objective observers.

i remember sitting down shocked that i had just witnessed floyd's first loss and pissed the hell off that i didn't bet the odds on the fight.

                then it happened.

I'm to bias too Hagler to be fair about Leonard vs Hagler so after years of being upset with Leonard, I finally moved on from that match

I must admit that Leonard stole more rounds than I wanted to give him credit for after watching that fight so many times. I think a DRAW would've been fair but it was a very close fight.

One thing I never liked about boxing is that when a fight is close it seems to become a Popular Contest, they usually give it to the guy who is more popular or the bigger draw

De La Hoya vs Trinidad is another good one to look back at. Oscar got a lot of hate because the Media loved him but after watching that fight years later, Oscar was ROBBED but nobody had sympathy for him because of the controversial decision he received over Ike Quartey and Pernell Whitaker but Oscar did enough to win that fight. He did make a mistake by taking his foot off the gas and I'm still not sure why because he was picking Trinidad apart early in the fight

Last I watched it, I had it 6-4 with 2 even rounds, for Mayweather. I wouldn't of had an issue if it went to Castillo though.
