Why don't Joshua fight Charles Martin for IBF title?

Charles Martin wants to fight Anthony Joshua, but Joshua seems not...

Charles Martin wants Anthony Joshua on April 9 at O2

Charles Martin's team have approached 'UK superstar' Anthony Joshua about fighting for the world title on April 9.

Britain's unbeaten heavyweight prospect is on a list of potential opponents drawn up by new champion Martin, who stopped Vyacheslav Glazkov in January to claim the IBF belt stripped from Tyson Fury.

And the American's team wants the fight to happen as early as April, when Joshua is due to headline a bill at London's O2 Arena against an as-yet unnamed opponent.

"I can confirm that Charles Martin is willing to fight Joshua April 9 in London," his manager Mike Borao told World Boxing News.

"Charles wants to make a statement in his first defence and wanted a Deontay Wilder or Tyson Fury unification. Both are busy with mandatory and contracted fights with Alexander Povetkin and Wladimir Klitschko, so Joshua is the next best thing."

Joshua spoke openly about his progress in the wake of December's wild win over Dillian Whyte and has always maintained he will take his time ascending to world level.

But that has not stopped some of the division's biggest names lining up to challenge the Olympic champion, and American Martin is the latest.

"We've reached out to Joshua's people," promoter Leon Margules told ******.com. "I think there's interest on their side but I just don't know if they think they're ready yet.

"They know they have a kid they're holding back. I think it's a fight that can be made if they think they're ready.

"We'd go to England if there is a fight. The kid is a superstar over there. Everyone is saying he's the second coming, so let's find out."

I might not go as far as to call him a coward, I think he'd take the fight, but hearn controls all his fighters.

basically the only question to consider; if he's ready and willing to take said fight at the O2 for $300k-$400k, Matchroom makes that fight yesterday. If Martin's camp is trying to get rich off of Joshua, Hearn will gladly look elsewhere for a fight for Joshua.

I think it has more to do with a summer date for Joshua rather than the Martin fight itself.

Knowing the IBF they'd force a mandatory straight away which would ruin a chance for a big fight in summer for Joshua.

Joshua's selling out the O2 no matter who he fights, although if he was able to get this then a voluntary he could probably do a Wembley stadium date with Wilder/Haye.

If they pass I think it'll have to do with wanting him to have a few more fights before they are forced to start fighting the top fighters. If he wins that title now he's immediately going to have to start fighting top 5 comp. it's a golden opportunity to get a hw strap early but if the thought process is that he will win one eventually then they might want to "develop" him further as a fighter before he's in the big time. He's making good money and the shots will come. Wonder how they handle this.

I don't see the need for Joshua to fight for a title already. He just started fighting live bodies & is making big money. Might as well fight some lesser guys & making more big money while still moving up the ladder & improving then being thrust into a title fight cuz 1)he doesn't deserves it yet, 2)its too early in his progression as a fighter & 3)he's probably just 9-18 mos from fighting for a title anyway..so he's already on a fast track to a title shot & Martin or whoever holds Martin's belt in the future is probably gonna be the target anyway.

And it kinda says everything that a title holder is calling out a prospect with how valuable Joshua will end up being in the future if he keeps moving like he's moving so obviously Joshua & Hearn have done a great job getting him where he's at thus far & should keep moving towards their own goalline & not be forced into anyone elses plan for them.

Agree. Once you got a title you get judged a little tougher & Joshua just started fighting live bodies so he'll be doing "on the job training" as a champion if he beat Martin (as I suspect he would) like Wilder & Loma have been doing due to their lack or amateur career & lack of a pro career respectively.

And lets be real Joshua just made more money than Wilder has been making in his title defenses so he's a money guy in the HW division already & doesn't even need to get a title til he's good & ready to do so.
