  • Charles Martin negotiating with Joshua tor April 9

"I can confirm that Charles Martin is willing to fight Joshua April 9 in London," Borao exclusively told World Boxing News on Friday.

"Charles wants to make a statement in his first defense and wanted a Wilder or Fury unification. Both are busy with mandatory and contracted fights with Povetkin and Klitschko, so Joshua is the next best thing.

Deontay Wilder has told Tyson Fury he is prepared to fight him in England and unify their heavyweight belts if the Briton wins his rematch bout with Wladimir Klitschko.

Undefeated WBC champion Wilder was confronted in the ring by Fury after taking his record to 36-0 with victory over Artur Szpilka in Brooklyn last month.

Fury has to meet Klitschko again after the Ukrainian invoked his rematch clause having lost his WBA, IBF and WBO belts in November, but Wilder has his sights set on facing whoever emerges victorious from that contest after his mandatory clash with Alexander Povetkin, possibly in April.

And the 30-year-old would be willing to venture on to Fury's own patch to make it happen.

"When he got in the ring I told him I'll come to his backyard and I mean that," he said in an appearance at Super Bowl 50's Radio Row in San Francisco.

"I'm willing to come over there. If he wins, I'm willing to come over there to take the titles. I'm very comfortable with England -- I've got a lot of friends, a ton of fans.

"I feel that when they say heavyweight champion of the world -- that's a world traveller, not just in your home country. When my legacy's over and done, I want to be labelled as someone who went behind enemy lines, fought everybody and had great exciting fights every time I came back."

I would have a newfound respect for Martin if he faced, and beat, Anthony Joshua in his first optional defense. That would be a pretty monumental statement if he was able to pull it off.

This or a fight with Joseph Parker would be entertaining.

I think he's going to get compensated accordingly

Too soon for Joshua - this is never happening, and if it does happen Hearn is not a good promoter, or they don't believe in his potential. When you get a strap you should be a fighter who is ready to deal with any style and not be out of your depth against any of the other champions or top contenders. That is not the case with Joshua today, and anyone who has followed his career knows this. He still has a lot to learn and experience to gain the Whyte fight should have made the clear to everyone so I am surprised by people's comments. You see too many fighters gifted a belt too early in a BS way, and then the promoter either helps them keep it hostage or the fighter comes unstuck. The objective when you have a potentially special prospect is to move them at a pace that when they do get a strap they have the experience to defend it and keep it for a long time.

Not saying beating Martin would be a BS way for Joshua to win it in this scenario, but my point still stands, if you are looking for long term success and the best for his career you don't put him in with these guys now when he may or may not win, you put him in when you know he's going to win and look good. I feel like Wilder also won his belt a little early and now he is having to learn to fight 12 rounds as the heavyweight champion, that shouldn't be the case.
