Comments Thread For: McDonnell To Make April Defense Before Payano Unification

BoxingScene.com reported a few days ago that the World Boxing Association (WBA) has ordered a mandatory fight between their "super" champion at bantamweight, unbeaten Dominican fighter Juan Carlos Payano (17-0, 8KO), and the "regular" champion of the same division, British boxer Jamie McDonnell (27-2-1, 12KO). Payano is also the world champion at 118-pounds under the IBO.

Its not really a unification though, is it?

The WBA regular bogus belt will be picked up by someone else afterwards

      McDonnell v Payano

So is McDonnell fighting for the regular (similar to ordinary), super, interim, champion in recess WBA title or have I missed one out?

It seems as though the WBA are trying to get rid of the 'regular' belt by mandating the regular champions to face the 'super' champions.

That is exactly what they are doing.

Yet they still churn out more regular belts to hand out

Its just a face saving exercise, I doubt they care about mandatory requirements etc, but not doing so would make them look even worse
