Comments Thread For: Hopkins Once Again Joins HBO Broadcast Team - Kovalev-Pascal II

The 2016 HBO boxing season will begin the same way its 2015 season concluded in regards to the on-site broadcast team.

For the second straight time, former middleweight and light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins will join Jim Lampley and Max Kellerman on the call, as well as newly elected Hall of Fame boxing historian Harold Lederman, who resumes his role as the network’s unofficial scorer.

I don't like that because I feel that Hopkins becomes a different person when he's with the HBO broadcasting team, one thing I always liked about Hopkins is when he used to put the so called boxing analysts in their place like he used to do with Larry Merchant, now he's the total opposite of that, he agrees to 99% of whatever they say, Roy at least contradicted Lampley and Kellerman a couple of times on air and we got some diversity of opinions, I guess the HBO team just want a yes man and sadly Hopkins will be their yes man.

I know what you mean in a way but it's different with Jones and B-Hop because you have to remember B-Hop has a vested interest with his company Golden Boy who are aired on HBO. B-Hop can't discredit the HBO commentary team too much because it might ultimately backfire on his own company if there is "dissension in the ranks" so to speak. Playing it safe through a diplomatic and non-aggressive stance is mainly a financial decision on Hopkins part. It doesn't make for great commentary though but it is what it is. I'd prefer if B-Hop just spoke his mind but business has got in the way.

Well the most important thing about being a commentator is being not biased, and you can't be not biased if you have business interests, that's why they shouldn't let a promoter be a commentator, HBO's commentarx is the main reason why I don't buy their fights anymore, I either watch fights on boxnation or I just stream them, they've really become unbearable with their bias and unprofessionalism, they are still the best when it comes to production though, but their commentary just sucks.
