Wba regular champions - countdown to extinction

The 15 year reign of tyranny is coming to an end. As the WBA announced yesterday, they are finally getting rid of "regular" world titles and bringing back some semblance of sanity to the title picture. A tournament was announced at heavyweight, Floyd Mayweather was finally stripped at welterweight and super welterweight and the WBA president tweeted that more tournaments will be forthcoming.

Out of the 17 divisions, only 8 regular champions remain:

    RUSLAN CHAGAEV
    JUERGEN BRAEHMER
    GIOVANNI DE CAROLIS
    DANIEL JACOBS
    JAVIER FORTUNA
    JESUS CUELLAR
    JAMIE MCDONNELL
    KAZUTO IOKA

So my question is, how long do you guys think it will take until ZERO regular champions remain? Two years? Three years? Longer?

Two years max. I'm glad to be honest less paper champions.

I think two years might be a bit ambitious, but I hope you're right. Would love to see the "regular" champions gone ASAP. Depending on how quickly certain guys move up in weight, maybe two years is possible.

It's a big step in the right direction. While I would like to see the WBA done away with altogether, I'm glad they are doing this. Less champions and less clutter and less to keep up with. The champions need to be clear cut. I hope they get rid of them all in one year.

The WBA & WBC hold the lineage of the sport, byway of the IBU, NSC, NYSAC & NBA.

The IBF & WBO were created out of thin air in the 1980s and have no claim to the sport's history.

Whether fans realize it or not, the WBA & WBC trace the sport back over a hundred years. So it was really a shame to see the WBA become such a joke. If any organizations were to go away, I'd much prefer the IBF & WBO so the sport wouldn't lose such a crucial part of its history.

The last 15 years have really done a number on the WBA's prestige. There was absolutely no way to justify having both WBA world champions and super WBA world champions. Hopefully over time they can repair the damage. This is a huge step in the right direction.

And hopefully at some point, we can see some WBA/WBC unifications again. With Floyd retired, I don't think we have any unified WBA/WBC champions right now, which is a shame. Historically, unifying those belts was how you established a new lineage.

Well, I thought the WBA should go because of corruption. I know they and the WBC are the two father alphabets of the sport and I respected them just fine before all of this super and regular mess.

I agree that it is a step in the right direction.

In all honesty though, one of the organizations needs to go period. I would prefer three of them go out of business, but at least one of them should for God's sake. Four recognized champions in 17 weight classes is a joke.

Either way, maybe this is a start.

Anthony, I also was completely in favor of derecognizing the WBA. It was being completely run into the ground. So this news was a) completely unexpected and b) a huge breath of fresh air.

The WBA and WBC having new presidents, so far, has been a good thing for the sport IMO. I would like to see at least one of the organizations go. Preferably the WBO as they should have never been given recognition to begin with.

And while I respect the IBF for being the only organization that follows the rules, it is causing the top fighters to avoid the IBF as being an IBF champion is more of a pain in the ass than being the champion of a different org. So the IBF is slowly losing relevance.

If the new leaders of the WBA & WBC can find a way to set the WBA & WBC apart from the IBF & WBO, I think it'd be a great thing for the sport.

Hougigo, that fight was already agreed to before the new policy and the WBA is being very careful here to make sure they don't get sued. They're going to have to slowly eliminate these belts in a way that don't infringe on anybody's contractual rights. Could take a little bit of time.
