Comments Thread For: Freddie Roach: I Have Received an Offer To Train Luis Ortiz

According to Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, he has an offer to train WBA interim-heavyweight champion Luis Ortiz of Cuba.

Last month, Ortiz (24-0, 21KOs) picked up his most impressive win to date with a knockout in seven rounds of respected contender Bryant Jennings.

Ortiz's handlers must be feeling good. They're convinced now they've got a real contender for the heavyweight crown. They're ready to go all in. Doesn't sound like Freddie can handle the workload, doe....

Why mess up a good thing? Luis Ortiz and his team have gotten themselves this far without any bumps in the road with his in ring performance.

They developed his overall skill very well. He has speed, power, and moves very well for a heavyweight.

So I don't know what more Roach brings to the table other than championship experience. Which is a valuable commodity but still Ortiz has done very well with the group of guys he has.

Roach should concentrate on developing his next wave of future champions. He should commit his time with Frankie Gomez, Jose Ramirez, Viktor Postol, etc.

I was thinking exactly that. Ortiz fought a lot of amateur fights and now has a good deal of pro experience. Roach isn't likely to improve much on the 36 year old fighter. But I do think Freddy's championship level pro experience might be the finishing touch at this point in Luis's career. An older guy like Ortiz might only get one shot at the title. You have to come with everything you can muster.

Why move to Roach? I have no clue, realistically why are fighters staying with Roach. I've always been a fan of him as a trainer but his health has gone down dramatically and has to retire/pass the torch.

When it comes to Ortiz, no reason to leave your current situation unless your looking for more plublicity by getting a high profile trainer.

Freddy could help any fighter given enough time

Sure Freddy could help Ortiz if given a few months time and Ortiz is willing to work hard and listen. Freddy is a busy man and has enough to do now with his current stable of pugs.

Im sure Freddie could get Ortiz in even better shape but the man is verry ill and need to cut his work down a bit and enjoy the last few years of his life.

Roach is not the right guy to go to for both Rigo or Ortiz, these guys base themselves behind defensive measures and roach is all attack.
