He's factually correct in what he states.
That being said, judging SRL by the twilight of his career is like dismissing Roy Jones Jnr as a bum just because he has spent the last few years closely scrutinizing more canvas than an art dealer.
SRL fell into the same trap as so many by reversing his retirement. It doesn't taint his legacy in any way. -
What I'm thinking... The end of a mans career can't completely define his legacy. Leonard was great to watch, and fought the best possible opposition which lead to some of the best fights of the 80's. Leonard although got what people may have seen as a gift against Hagler put on other great fights against Duran, Hearns, Mayweather, and Benitez. His speed was great, power was good, great footwork, great combinations and a good boxing IQ cemented by a great trainer in Dundee. Fighter of the year in 79 in which the man fought 8 times (8 f***ing times) and again in 81. Why argue his legacy?Comment

Leonard's resume at 147 speaks for itself. I'm not convinced there's been a welter who could've beaten him since he left the division. His resume above 147 probably is overrated though. Hagler looked old. That said, I thought he lost and Ray deserves credit for beating him. Hearns was robbed in their rematch though. After that, it's not pretty. Leonard's overall accomplishments are outstanding and I can't see how isn't top 20 at worst, and probably top 10.Comment

He is overrated but that doesn't mean he isn't great. He's just such a great public figure people forget he lost to a lightweight moving up two divisions.Comment

overrated yes and like a poster said above me factually he is correct but a fighters later years where he has fall from grace should be taken with a grain of salt and for me doesnt impact a figthers legacy.

Leonard accomplished quite a lot. Hall of fame career for sure. I didn't care for some of his ring tactics, but that's just a matter of preference. He earned his way and although he did avoid rematches with Hearns and Hagler, he did take Hearns in their first fight when a lot would have thrown in the towel. That was a great achievement. He's not my favorite, but he deserves his praise.Comment

That post is exactly right. I should know. I posted it. Leonard was excellent in his prime but some boxers age better than others. Leonard certainly didn't age as well as Hearns who was winning world titles at an age when Leonard was completely done. Check the records and you will see it's true. I make mistakes on here but I never make stuff up. Leonard was destroyed by Norris when he was 33 years old. The 25 year old Leonard probably would have destroyed Norris.Comment
