GB looks to Gamboa for Vargas

Golden Boy looks to Yuriorkis Gamboa for Francisco Vargas

Golden Boy vice president Eric Gomez would like to match his newly crowned titleholder Francisco Vargas against Yuriorkis Gamboa. If that doesn't materialize, there's still a rematch on the table between Vargas and Takashi Miura, in what was named ESPN's 2015 Fight of the Year.

Junior lightweight titilist Francisco Vargas is riding high after winning a world title in what was named ESPN's 2015 Fight of the Year just a couple of short months ago. Now his promotional company, Golden Boy, is looking towards what's next for him. In particular, Eric Gomez, the VP of Golden Boy, says he'd like to make a fight between Francisco Vargas (23-0-1, 17 KOs) and Yuriorkis Gamboa (25-1, 17 KOs) .

"We've mentioned it to 50 Cent [Gamboa promoter Curtis Jackson] and it's a fight we'd like to make," Gomez said.

Gamboa has recently been fighting at lightweight, most recently beating Hylon Williams Jr. last month, but insists he's still able to make 130lbs for the right fight. Given the styles of the two men, this fight could be action-packed.

However, If Vargas-Gamboa doesn't materialize, Golden Boy can always fall back on a sequel of the 2015 Fight of the Year, throwing Vargas and Takashi Miura back at one another. This rematch would be an easy no-brainer, given the back and forth action and drama provided in their first meeting. But my general sense is that they're looking at it sort of like the trilogy between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado, knowing that another installment will always be there to make, so there's not necessarily a rush to make that Vargas' next fight.

"It was a great fight and we'd also be interested in doing a rematch if HBO is interested," Gomez said. "Vargas can be ready to go as early as March. He wants big fights and he wants to be on HBO."

Gomez also mentioned that they'd be interested in a title unification fight with Roman "Rocky" Martinez as well. So there are plenty of good options on the table for Vargas right now, with none of them being particularly easy fights.

Tough fight for Gamboa and I don't see him winning this fight unless he really works on his stamina. Vargas is no joke, he is relentless, loves to trade and has been on a nice hot streak as of late.

Gamboa better be ready. I will probably go watch this live if it's in LA, great Stubhub fight.

This will be a tough match for both, I got Vargas in a brutal stoppage midrounds.

Theres better options out there right now. A stay busy fight before the Salido vs Martinez winner than a years end bout with Uchiyama would be ideal. He can get Gamboa next year. I really hope Vargas goes this route. He has the potential to be Mexicos best fighter if he did...

I like Gamboa here. Will he win? I don't know but I've always thought Gamboa was a ****** for going to 135. He doesn't have the size and with the extra muscle he just doesn't seem as fast.

At 130 he's a nightmarish like puncher. I like Vargas but if he's put in the kind of trouble he was placed in by the muuuuuuch slower Miura I don't think he makes it out the round vs Gamboa. Gamboa gets bored and restless though and gets tagged clean with those lapses in concentration.

Still...at 130? If he's anything he once was I honestly might be over selling him but Gamboa can be a f uckin stud. I like him at 130 vs practically anyone...with proper preparation (lol).

                Gamboa has alot of options

                Vargas
                Walters
                Lomachenko
                Uchiyama
                Linares (135)

130 and 135 seems to be HBO's hottest division right now.

                50-50 fights

Gamboa probably beats him. Vargas is a very mediocre boxer. He need someone slow to look good against.

I don't know what to make of Vargas. He beat a good opponent last time but there was nothing convincing before that, fighting a bunch of mediocre fighters. He did show heart though and has some good basic skills. Thing is, he's already 31, lacks any real athletic gifts and looks a lot older, possibly closer to 40 lol

I think Gamboa, if he is in good shape, can take this.
