No Fighter Today Has This Kind of Class

There are some classy guys around, but to me, Archie is like a mentor- a guy you go to for advice even. Big George did. And this guy paid his dues like no other, fighting for over ten years and in over a hundred fights against anybody and everybody before he got his shot. An amazing man.Comment

Of course. He was black he couldn't be arrogant. Muhammad Ali was absolutely hated because he was arrogant. There was a concerted effort in the 80's to revamp Ali's image and it worked. They love Ali now but hated him in the 60's and 70'sArchie Moore came from a much different time, but he was so classy all the way. If he got hurt, he gave his opponent credit. If he lost, he admitted it. If he won, he was gracious in victory. I can't think of any fighters today who carry themselves this way.

Ali was hated by some but it didn't keep him from having big fights and making big money. I don't think race had anything to do with it. More of a personality thing. I honestly don't think that Archie Moore or Joe Louis would have been arrogant in any environment. Way too much class. In an interview from 1998, way detached from the 60s and 70s, Moore was not one shred any more arrogant than before. Rocky Marciano could have certainly been arrogant but he was not. He didn't have the personality to be. Arrogance is never attractive. Ali was funny and entertaining. That's why people liked him, not because of arrogance. Archie Moore would tell you he's one of the best of all time and he can back that up, but he wouldn't discredit anybody else to do it, either.Comment
