Comments Thread For: Abner Mares Eyes Mid-February Return, Gary Russell Bout

Former three division world champion Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15KOs) is focused on landing another world title opportunity in 2016.

After winning a ten round unanimous decision over Arturo Reyes in March, he fought a twelve round war with California rival Leo Santa Cruz on August 29th in Carson, California. Santa Cruz won a majority decision to capture the vacant WBA featherweight title.

    Good Options for Abner

I would like to see a fight between Abner Mares and Gary Russell Jr. To me Abner has proven himself to be a very good champion and has had a very good career. However he might be getting to the downside of his career and I'm not sure he is a true featherweight in my opinion.

He and Leo was a hell of a fight but as the fight went on you can tell he wasn't being as effect as he was at the beginning of the fight and he faded.

Gary Russell is still very unproven. He got beat easily by Loma and somehow someway got a shot against Johnny Gonzalez then cut through Johnny like butter. However Gonzalez is on the downside of his career and I think Abner would test Gary Russell.

Gary Russell would probably open up as the favorite against Mares in my opinion. For both guys matches against Shelby and Cuellar would also be good fights for both.

Featherweight is very loaded with established talent and high level up and coming prospects. The featherweight division should be very hot in 2016.

If PBC does Garcia vs. Guerrero, Russell Jr. vs. Mares, Thurman vs. Porter, and Badou Jack vs. Chavez Jr., they will be starting 2016 VERY STRONG! Make it happen!

Make it happen would be a very entertaining fight. Between Russell's fast hands and Leo's work rate it would definitely be a FOTY kinda fight.

Much respect to Mares. He seems like one of these cats who'll fight whoever, whenever. I'd still really like to see Russell vs Santa Cruz vs Selby go down next year to find out who's the #1 guy at 126 or at least arguably the #1 guy since Loma would be left out & is obviously a very capable guy himself.

Wilder vs Povetkin could be added to that list, and don't forget about Carl Frampton - Scott Quigg

I don't think Mares needs to fight Santa Cruz again. It's been proven what will happen again in a RM. What would be interesting is a big test for Russell. Mares may be toward the end of his career, at least at high level, but he could give Russell a rough time IMO.
