Canelo Needs New Coaches If He Wants to Excel at Middleweight

First thing first, Canelo forget the catchweight ****. Fight at 160, the division limit, and fight your boogeyman, the guy who needs no introduction.

    It won't happen in 2016!

IMO, this can be a great fight at 160 either in May or September, 2017. It is also how it looks like now. I don't see Canelo fighting him until sometime in 2017. What's the urgency on Canelo's part to fight him now? His opponent brings no money or big name recognition on PPV (which this fight will definitely be).

I guess Oscar had it all planned out when he said 2017 (smart move). The WBC belt? Lol.

That said, Canelo will have to make some important changes-- including trainers, conditioning coaches (if he has any), and others. His trainers are cool and supportive to him, and they can stay, but maybe even they know he needs a lot more stuff and some fresh new drills.

He needs this right now before his next fight. Working on stuff takes time. Supplement your team with other good trainers/coaches-- get the best in the business. Go to the next level.

Who do you think would make a good coach (or coaches) for Canelo now?

I got Canelo winning convincingly or even by KO/TKO (when/if he faces the current middleweight boogeyman in 2017) based on his skills, never-die slick style, and guts.

    Make the Changes!

What exactly is he dong wrong that he needs new trainers? I see people say things like this without pointing out the failings in the training. He's made massive improvements since the May fight and I have to give his trainers a lot of credit for that.

For one thing, they could figure out the weight. He's not someone who needs to kill himself to make his own weight class of 155, while he might be much better at the full middle limit. As far as technique, his trainers took him as far as they could. I just think it is time to add a new perspective.

I think it's amazing that he gets down to 155 when he's built like that.
As far as trainers, I think he needs a camp that can bring in top opposition. Guys that will push him harder in different aspects because he often looks like he's learning as he goes in these big fights. I can't say that I see him doing anything specifically wrong (aside from relying on power to win rounds and getting skimpy on volume) but I do think he would be on another level if he got more time in some world-class gyms.

I will give his trainers major credit for the way they ingrain his movements. Everything he does looks like he's done it 5 million times in training. Like a machine.

Exactly right, or bring the world-class to him, in terms of co-trainers/coaches and their associated fighters.

His trainers are doing a good job, if anything, more fighters should be heading towards the Reynoso family. I was never sold on Canelo, but one thing you have give Canelo and his trainers, is that they are doing what very few combinations are able to well, keep their fighters improving.

The one department i saw Canelo improve on his last fight is slipping punches on the inside. He was the bigger guy ducking under cotto's punches, witch are not slow by any means and harder for the bigger guy to do. And when he fought Cotto, he didn't really do it by imposing his size, he was literally countering Cotto all day within his range, the only times i would see Canelo truly imposed himself is when Cotto got aggressive and the final round, besides those instances, he was countering very well.

Canelo needs to stop fighting in spurts, thats what will separate him from the pinnacle of the sport. This constant resting gets him in trouble, when he lets his hands go he does great work. slipping punches, counters well off the jab. he needs to move to 160 so he can be comfortable, get a S&C trainer. And he should have everything he needs to place an impact on the sport... but he is going to hit a serious brick wall when he fights GGG. everyone else has let him recuperate during rounds, taking the round off etc. GGG will constantly be in his face. I see GGG pushing canelo back to the ropes as James did for the brief moments. Then bodybag him....

Canelo has good offense but at times it looks like he tries to copy Floyd with a shoulder roll or a pull back and counter maybe he needs Mayweather Sr only as a defensive coach. The reason why I say defensive coach is Floyd Sr screwed up Delahoya offensive attack he stop using many of those deadly hooks that Mexican coach work on

Yeah, maybe he should hire Floyd Sr since its obvious that he is trying to copy some of Floyd Jr's moves.

Canelo gets stopped if and when he fights the middleweight masher. You know you the real deal when for year's the best fighters in your weight class refused to fight you, dropped interim belts, moved up a weight class, a P4P perennial top fighter wants to fight you, and fighters making their own weight class to not step in the ring with you.

Only way Canelo wins is if the fight happens in 2017 and Reynoso's got Canelo to improve on his footwork, punch output, and use neck weights to help absorb the shock of punches. Other than that the kid can counter the jab really good, solid defensive upper body manuveurs and is patient for openings.

It would be a biggee fight in 2017 especially if Canelo gets BJS, and GGG gets Lee.
