  • Comments Thread For: Verdejo Will Not Chase Any Titles Held By Puerto Ricans

The possibility that Felix Verdejo (19-0 and 14 KO's) will target the WBO and IBF world titles which are held by Roman 'Rocky' Martinez and Jose Pedraza is virtually none, according to the fighter's trainer and coach Ricky Marquez.

It seems that only Americans, Mexicans, and the British have the balls to fight their own.

        Why Not??

I understand not wanting to fight Jose Pedraza yet. Because you can build that up to a all Puerto Rican Showdown like Morales vs Barrera or De La Hoya vs Vargas.

But why not Rocky Martinez? That guy is right there for the picking. He wouldn't last more than 6 rounds at best. Your on a whole other planet talent wise.

Yet you want to target Linares or Flanagan. Those guys are at another level compared to Pedraza and Martinez. Talk about taking a major step up in competition. Those guys are both at the top of the division.

I look forward to seeing what Top Rank does with Felix Verdejo. He's a promising talent with major upside. He sounds and looks ready to move on to bigger and better things in his career.

Not to mention his fellow Puerto Ricans are with Al Haymon so that would probably be difficult to make. But it still sounds like your limiting yourself on title chances when you say you don't want to fight those guys.

What an ignorant. You should not fight your countrymen? Your race??? Ethnic group?? It is fun to see different ethnicities or nationalities fight but with that reasoning no Hagler- Leonard, Ali-Frazier, Barrera-Morales, De La Hoya- Vargas, etc??

How many Puerto Rican champions even are there out there compared to their number of active fighters right now?

I don't blame him for not wanting to take out other successful countrymen it's not a particularly great time in history for Puerto Rican boxing why would he want to help make it even worse.

I don't think it always applies because there is a point where it's ******, but I understand the sentiment.

**** that ****. Prove you're the best even if that means taking a title away from one of your countrymen.

Imagine if the 1800s-1990s Heavyweights did that and all fought Euro bums
