Comments Thread For: HBO's Nelson on The Future of Chocolatito Gonzalez

The newly appointed Executive Vice President of HBO Sports, Peter Nelson, played a key role in bringing undefeated WBC flyweight champion Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez (44-0) to his network's airwaves.

The diminutive three-division champion debuted on the premium network in May when he stopped Edgar Sosa in two rounds on the Gennady Golovkin-Willie Monroe undercard in Inglewood, Calif. He followed that performance up with a 9th round stoppage of former champion Brian Viloria in October in the chief support of the Golovkin-David Lemieux pay-per-view main event that took place in New York.

I understand it takes time to make a star but at Chocolatitos weight class, he needs to be fighting the best available every fight. If Gonzalez faces Estrada, its a win/win for HBO. If Gonzalez wins, every Mexican from 108-116 will be lining up to fight Gonzalez and if Gonzalez loses, than HBO gains a star in Estrada. Either way HBO gets the Mexican peso. No one wants to see 112lb fighters fighting the Daniel Geales of boxing.

Exactly. They cant afford to just give him a tune up after every tough fight. He needs to go on a murderer's row

It might be too soon for Estrada who wasn't fought in US for a bit now. Ruenroeng beat Ioka and a couple other decent fighters so that's a fight I wouldn't mind seeing despite his lack of notoriety.

Either way, would be a shame if you're trying to build a star and he loses so early on against such a good Mexican.
