Comments Thread For: Roach: Floyd Mayweather Would Outbox Golovkin

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach gave his take on the fantasy matchup between recently retired pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs) and WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs).

Mayweather retired from the ring in September after beating Andre Berto over twelve rounds. Prior to his retirement, Golovkin said he was willing to drop down to the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds for a dream fight with Mayweather, who held the WBC/WBA belts in that division.

Pacquiao and Roach fan here, as well as GGG fan, and I agree, Floyd Mayweather will be too fast, too slick for GGG. He beats GGG via UD unless GGG can land a good shot, which the chances aren't too high.

The younger version of Mayweather might have been able to out box GGG. I know triangle theories don't always work in boxing but Maidana was able to cut off the ring and rough up the present version of Mayweather, therefore I find it hard to believe GGG wouldn't be able to do the same in more devastating fashion.

Golovkin doesn't rough his opponents up, he doesn't fight on the inside like Maidana. Bad comparison.

Bad plan, Floyd has always been happy to be favorite on paper but not have to prove it to anyone.

But being underdog Floyd has a problem with to prove that you should never make him underdog like they made Ali against foreman.
Floyd refuses to take risks to be underdog.

You're right, should have explained it better. What I envision is GGG cutting of the ring and ripping hard body shots and punches from unusual angles up top.
