The teams behind Olympic gold medal winner Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22KOs) and WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (35-0, 34KOs) are in talks for a mandatory clash, according to the Russian fighter's promoter Andrei Ryabinsky of World of Boxing.

Wilder is first set for a defense against tough Polish contender Artur Szpilka on January 16th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

I don't often say this, but..... good on the WBC.

Enforce the mandatory. Wilder (assuming he gets past this next defense) NEEDS to face someone like Povetkin. If he were to beat Povetkin convincingly, this should dispel all criticism of his not facing great opposition.

Idk if Wilder is capable of putting on a clinic vs anyone with a pulse quite yet, but Wilder is the favorite here to me although he's gonna need to earn this W like no other fight he's been in.
