Kovalev fought his IBF mandatory in July, so he still has many months before he has to face Barrera.

Fighting Barrera is a good back-up plan in case Stevenson chickens out.

Having mandatories will keep Kovalev more active this year, he will fight at least three times, maybe even four.

Barrera's manager can ask for a voluntary fight (Kathy Duva xD) , or the unification could be next, and that would place the mando right after.
